Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Lake Carasaljo

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Dear Sir:

I live on the shores of lake Carasaljo, which I consider to be one of the nicest spots in town. It is both quiet and beautiful and the sunsets are magnificent.

The quiet path is enjoyed by young and old at all hours as a peaceful place to walk.

Recently, there has been an influx of unlicensed motorcycles on the path which are loud, noisy and dangerous. In addition I am informed that they plan to rent motorized bikes to speed up and down the path endangering old and young!

Is there any way to stop this from happening? ruining and endangering all of us who want to enjoy a peaceful walk on the path?

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The Police Department was unaware of this situation. They will increase patrols around the lake and put a stop to this if they find it.

You were informed incorrectly. There is no plan to rent motorbikes around the lake. The committee would not give permission for this. If you want to let me know who told you this I would be happy to get in touch & set them straight.

Take Care & stay safe

  1. The mayor should be asked about the astonishing amount of garbage that is all over the path there. It has never been so bad!

  2. I hope that the Mayor will differentiate between noisy motorcycles and quiet, fun, and safe E-bikes. Are you also bothered by the throngs of kids on regular bikes which go around the lake? There is much healthy “noise” around the lake theoughout many hours during the day. Is the lake path intended only for peacful walking? All township trails are permitted for walking running, and biking. Will running or biking also be prohibited? The NJ state law clearly allows quiet and safe E-bikes and running wherever regular bikes and walking are permitted.

  3. why does one person get to decide how the path gets used
it’s for everyone – some people like to ride bikes – since when is the path only for those who like walking
if this guy doesn’t like it, let him move to some less scenic part of lakewood
    what a chutzpa

  4. How about cleaning the lake Mr. Mayor?

The lake has gone from a serene, clean fun place to a filthy overgrown bed of organism and garbage.

  5. Wow. “I don’t anyone to be able to ride their bikes on the public path around the lake they disturb me and I EVEN LIVE THERE!”
    Insert lightbulb changing joke here:

  6. A) Ebikes are not the same as kids riding small bikes. They should not be allowed.

    B) The parks around Lake Carasaljo are overdue for a minor upgrade.

    C) regular and ongoing maintenance is needed around the path of the lake.

  7. No ebikes should be allowed either. I’ve ridden them and they go faster than normal bikes. They are a safety hazard to those walking around the lake.

  8. I hope the questioner is correct! Finally some other scenery other than husbands and wives “power walking” around the lake. I personally have always believed that it is a tremendous hazard for the drivers to witness the stwange looking lake walker type people. Please say it is so Mr. Mayor!

  9. The new E bike rentals is advertising on this site

It says enjoy miles of trails in Pine Park and around Lake Carasaljo

Regardless of everyone’s very intelligent opinion of people walking around the lake Electric bikes belong on the street not on a path where many people walk young and old

No it’s not just “husbands and wives”

At least the mayor seems to get it

  10. To “Ha”

I actually own an E-bike, not a business, and enjoy safely riding it around the lake over the past year and half

  11. The real problem are cars speeding around the lake, everyone going well over the speed limit, someone is going to get injured.

  12. Wow so many issue sat the lake 🙂

On a serious note now that the governor is removing the face mask guidelines when will city hall be open with all public meetings taking place with the public??

  13. It would actually be nice if New Jersey would dedicate a generous amount of land for dirt bike riders to operate their bikes legally.
