Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Intersection of Williams and Prospect

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

To the Mayor,

Back in May of 2021, my 10 year old son was crossing Prospect at the crosswalk on Prospect and Williams St and was hit by a car coming south bound on Wiliams St and turning left onto Prospect.

Thank G-d the driver was going slow since they had stopped at the light and my son was just left with bruises and scrapes.

The reason I’m writing this is since the driver indicated she looked before she turned and did not see my son. The reason I believe this may be the case is since the crosswalk is about 15 to 20 ft away from the corner. Drivers are accustomed to look at the corners for pedestrians and may not notice where the crosswalk leads to. This is especially true at night.

A few times that I was at that intersection, I actually gaped when I noticed a pedestrian crossing since they’re not naturally noticed without paying special attention.

In order to avoid any possible tragedy, I’m writing to you to have this intersection evaluated and perhaps have the crosswalk moved so our pedestrians are safe.

Many thanks in advance.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thank you for this letter. I am very relived that your son is OK.

I am asking our engineer & traffic and safety department to look into this intersection & the crosswalk and see what we can do to make it safer.

Stay Safe

  1. That intersection is the worst intersection and if you are going north on Williams at the corner of prospect you will notice that the straight Lane and the left lane which is both the same or actually directly opposite the oncoming southbound lane from Williams Because the right lane is a turning right only and that laying in truth is really directly opposite the correct Lane that you supposed to be driving in so that intersection is asking for an accident as the cars going north actually are going straight into the southbound traffic that must be fixed before tragedy strikes every time I drive over there it’s shocking to notice how cars have to Swerve from causing an accident

  2. Willams and James St intersection is desperate for a working traffic light. The line of vehicles northbound on Williams can often reach past Buttell Ave, since the crossing guard is no longer there. James St was closed for a while for traffic light prep work. Where’s s the traffic signal, Please?!?

  3. I cross that street very often, lighting is very bad. Another issue is that the button for pedestrians to push when they need to cross doesn’t always work. When it does it takes long to get a walk signal. Easy fixes.

  4. Actually when they built those houses there they added nice safe side walks + lighting that was not there, it was very dangerous before. A cyclist was even killed there.
