Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: I got different answers from police officers

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Mr. Mayor:

Thank you for taking time to answer questions from our community.

When one is driving Rt 9 N and wants to make a left to North Lake Dr (by the Courtyard) but the light in Rt 9 (in front of him) is red, can he make this turn (since the left turning lane end before the light)? I asked this question to different police officers and got different answers. Additionally, if it is allowed and one gets a ticket, how does one win his case in court (since at least some police officers will ticket for that)?

Thank you,

A resident trying to obey the rules

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon,

Sorry for the delay in response, but I wanted to make sure I got this right, so I went to our traffic & safety office.

They tell me that the left lane is under control of the traffic signal. It is within the confines of the intersection. The reason the lane is shorter or set back is to allow traffic to turn to head south onto Rt 9 without any conflicts.

So basically, if the light is red, wait for the next cycle. Since it is not allowed, fighting a ticket would be tough.

Ray

I have seen Cops on many occasions making that left while the light was red.

No problem for a cop. Join them for the perks.

There is a solid white line at the front of the lane, therefore it’s part of the intersection.

Why can’t they just make a left turning signal

Help!
Its the 3rd cycle already, how many more cycles will I have to wait before the car ahead of me is able to make the turn?
Wouldn’t a turn signal make sense if this is controlled by the light?

Rabosei, this is a state highway and it is not easy to get the state to consider this left turn unless the Mayor works on it

A left turn signal will make traffic worse for cars going southbound. During congested times try turning left onto 1st St instead- there is no light there
