Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Hope and County Line Light

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to AskTheMayor@thelakewoodscoop.com.

Question:

Hi,

When driving from Jackson towards Lakewood, the light by Hope and County is very short. Many times the cars get backed up all the way to Pine Park and during certain times of the day it can take 4 or 5 light to go. There seems to be an inconsistency here. How can we get this corrected?

Response from Mayor Coles:

We will ask the county engineer to look into & adjust the timing at this light.

Thanks

Ray

  1. The issue isn’t the hope chapel x county line light. The issue is the lights on hope chapel are completely not synced so hope chapel backs up all the way to county which in turn backs up all the way to Jackson.
After you pass south lake drive there is zero traffic !
The county needs to fix all traffic lights on hope chapel road to match the traffic and road conditions and that would likely fix the traffic for the most part.

  2. The problem is not so much a short light, it is the cars heading west on County Line that are making the left on to Hope. As the light turns red everyone rushes through it to make the turn and are getting jammed up with cars blocking one or both eastbound lanes of County Line. Traffic then comes to a stop heading East as well as the cars coming out of Hope heading west. Add to that the cars picking up the hitchhikers stopping on the SW corner of Hope and these are the main reasons why you wait in line for so long.

    • Good point. I also think that a turning lane to make a right from East County Line onto Hope would alleviate a lot of the back up. Maybe the township can consider buying one the buildings before the corner such as Tax Pros and let people turn onto Avis/Hope?

  3. This is just the beginning of a serious problem. A lot of the traffic in some areas is caused by Jackson drivers coming in and out of Lakewood. So Lakewood needs to soend much money on fixes but they are getting zero tax dollars from the Jackson drivers. When ee have a lot of growth in Lakewood ,at least there are some tax dollars that comes along with that to help fix the infrastructure. But a lot of the traffic is due to Jackson and TR residents who are paying nothing to Lakewood. This problem will keep on getting much worse unless eventually most of Jackson drivers will work and shop and school in Jackson not in Lakewood .
