Question:
Mr. Mayor,
What can be done to make our garbage trucks leak proof? Especially in the summer, the garbage trucks leave a massive trail of liquid garbage in Chateau Park. The place smell terrible and absolutely ruins our quality of life.
Can we ask them to stop compressing the garbage at every stop? Or maybe have the cleaning truck follow them and clean the street once a week.
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good morning,
The trucks are not made to be fully watertight. There is a seal in them that can occasionally go bad. Whenever you see a truck leaking please call public works with the time & location so we can have the truck checked out.
The water that gets into the trucks comes almost exclusively rain water from the garbage cans and dumpsters. The only way to eliminate this is to make sure that all cans and dumpsters remain covered at all times.
We will do our best to maintain the trucks to eliminate this, but again, we can all help to avoid it by not overfilling our cans and making sure to leave the lids down.
Thanks
Ray

Mr. Mayor, on a lighter note, I allegedly complained to a friend of mine about the trail of liquid garbage that is leaking all across our neighborhood leaving a terrible, permeating smell.
He reportedly told me, “Shhh, keep a lid on this, we don’t want the whole Lakewood to find out about this, and to uncover the truth about these garbage bins!”
“Enough with the leakers already!” he said. “We got too many leaks coming out of the media and the federal government!”
You can drill big holes on the bottom of your bin to make sure it drains before your garbage gets picked up.
