Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Flooding

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Good afternoon Mr. Mayor.

I am hoping you can help me out with 2 ongoing issues on Finchley Blvd. I live on Shayas Rd. which is a cul de sac and leads into Finchley Blvd. With every rainfall, we have terrible flooding on the street. It is hard for pedestrians to walk without getting drenched, and our children waiting on the corner for their busses are getting soaked. It would seem to me that there is insufficient drainage on the block which in turn leads to high water levels.

The second issue is that cars are constantly parked on both sides of the road. In the morning, there can be a wait time of 20 minutes to get down the block, between the numerous school busses getting stuck waiting to get thru the cars. I would suggest that a “no parking” rule be instituted on one side of the road.

Thanks you for having a forum available to address issues in our town. Looking forward to a prompt response!

Thank you, Goldie

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thanks Goldie.

I am going to have our engineering Department look at the flooding issue and see what needs to be done to alleviate it. I am also going to ask Traffic & Safety to do a survey there and give us recommendations to help get things moving again.

  1. Parking rules are worth nothing if they are never enforced.
I would venture to say that the only ones who don’t want it to be enforced are the ones who park illegally. Unfortunately they make the most noise so nothing will change.
Sort of why you have drainage issues in the first place. “The oilam” is not interested in zoning that makes any sense.

  2. There’s a spot on Chestnut street that gets flooded every time it rains -despite the fact that the road was redone not so long ago.

  3. I think a street that has no parking on one side should have yellow lines in the middle to indicate that the side that had no parking is a driving lane.

  4. I live on Finchley too and I remember about 6 months ago on this forum someone asked the mayor about the flooding and lighting on Finchley and he gave the same response
We need someone to follow up with departments after the mayors initial notice .
Ty all keep up the gr8 work

  5. There is no drainage on Finchley. It is a shame because aside from the flooding the excess puddling is also destroying the newly paved street, causing cracks and gigantic potholes. Finchley was recently paved very well and it is all corroding due to the puddles freezing or just sitting.
