The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question:
I live on third and Forest. My street has been flooding for many years now. We were so excited when they came to repair the flooding last year and clean out the sewer so that the streets could drain. Thankfully they they did most of it however we are still left with a terrible problem. Road repair guys did not put a correct slant toward the sewer on the Third street side and nothing drains toward the sewer from that side. So after so many years of waiting we still have flooding. Can the township send someone to remedy this situation soon?
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good morning,
Our engineer went out to the area.
We will be adding another inlet there to eliminate the problem. Additionally, the entire street will be repaved as soon as NJAW completes their infrastructure upgrade.
Thanks
Ray

A quick Google search will answer the question. Flooding is a common issue where development is extensive.
I think that if you put Mr. Google into a storm drain on a simple street, all of a sudden, he will start giving you different results, like I just got a few bricks on my head, beer bottles, broken glass from wine, spirits and beer.
Oh that hurt really hard, a huge broken piece of junky wood, pieces of concrete and then eventually Mr. Google goes silent because he is buried under 25 tons of left over leaves, dirt and all kinds of miscellaneous junk that was just sitting around near the storm drains for months and everyone just ignored it until one whopper rain storm kicked in and somehow all the junk from the street ended up down the storm drain.
“Oh” was meant to be “ouch”
Yes, I remember when the TWP guys were cleaning the storm drains (as they care called BTW, ‘sewer’ in the question is a slight misnomer here – it is a different set of pipes), and the fellow pulled out many plastic water bottles. It seems many young people think the drains are a garbage can, and they don’t realize it clogs up the drains – with a small clog having a snowball effect, and becoming worse, as more debris is trapped.
Certainly, most people throw their bottles in the garbage (‘er, recycling), but some do not understand.
They were cleaning them out (the catch basins) before Pesach, last year, when they repaved the lower half of Forest Ave.
Anyway, the drains in part of ton go to the lake, so there is unlimited draining capability. The 3rd St issue has to do with just the structure of the street, obviously.
TY Mr. Mayor
Dear Mayor Coles,
Yes, it’s me again with yet another idea that will radically improve Lakewood for the better.
Every city is looking for ways to increase revenue.
My idea is to label any flooded area as a “Municipal Swimming pool” This way you can charge admission to anyone who enters the water for any reason. Also, beach chairs can be available to rent for those who just like to sit & relax. This will draw food & drink vendors that will be charged a substantial permit fee.
This idea will benefit Lakewood in so many ways that it’s really a no brainier.

That’s only gonna work if you have segregated swimming. No gender mixing. It could lead to mixed dancing.
When is the town going to do something about the flooding at Stark St. & Pine Acres Blvd? That and other roads have been flooding out since 1977 and every bad storm since. If you don’t believe me I have a picture of me and 4 kids in my rowboat in that intersection.
