Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Fishing at the Lake

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi, I grew up fishing at the lake, and it happens to have been a good fishery, but of late there has been many people fishing without being aware of the laws and licensing rules. They are negatively effecting the populations of fish in the lake. If everyone would stick to the rules we would have a great fishery for many Years to come. Also, can they start stocking more sport fish besides for trout? There’s a need for more bass and shiners in the lake.

Thanks,

Avi

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Avi

I need to find more time to get out on the lake & fish. It has been way too many years. I took my oldest daughter when she was around 4 years old. She actually caught a pickerel which scared her so much she refused to go fishing again, which may explain why I haven’t gotten out either.

But to get back to your questions. The State Fish & Game Commission is responsible for issuing & enforcing the license requirements. Licenses are available at Walmart & Dick’s Sporting Goods. Folks should also be aware that they need a trout stamp to keep any that they catch. I’m not sure how often they check licenses around here but I have asked Public Works to look into that and also the possibility of stocking something other than trout. Our director doesn’t think they stock anything other than trout but we will ask.. I will also see if we can put up some signs around the lakes reminding folks of their responsibility to purchase license & let them know where to get one.

Thanks,

Ray

Stocking fish?

They put fish in the lake, so others can catch them?

Anyway we can work on cleaning the perimeter of the lake? I grew up there as well, and over the years, the growth has been unattended and become out of control.

According to NJ state information only between the ages of 16 – 70 do you need a fishing license or trout stamp.
“A valid fishing license and trout stamp are both required to fish for or possess trout and salmon for all anglers (residents and non-residents) 16 and over, and residents under the age of 70. No trout stamp is required for residents age 70 years and over. ”
“Licenses
“A valid New Jersey fishing license is required for residents at least 16 years and less than 70 years of age (plus all non-residents 16 years and older) to fish the fresh waters of New Jersey, including privately owned waters.”
I”ve always let my children under the age of 16 fish based on this. Is the rule in Lakewood different?

@resident
Good morning. Have you been living under a rock?

Manasquan stocks their reservoir with fish, as does brick, and many many other town lakes and reservoirs.

Its not just for fishing purposes. It helps with the water wildlife eco system.
