Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles Responds to Your ‘Ask The Mayor’ Questions: East End, Clifton Ave, Leaves, Prospect, Somerset Lighting

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to AskTheMayor@thelakewoodscoop.com.

Question:

Hi Mr. Mayor,
I know you get emails a lot about the traffic and different ways or ideas on how to improve some roads. I am hoping you can get this intersection to the top of the list.

The intersection by East End and County Line is a very busy one not just at rush hour times but at all times. The vehicles going down East End towards County Line have a very hard time. It is one lane, with no area to go around a turning vehicle. If the first vehicle is making a left turn from East End onto County Line no cars behind can go as there is just simply zero room. This causes an extreme backup. And let me remind you that there is a very busy doctor’s office on the corner and parking on both sides of the street. I know it can be difficult to get a turning signal but I am hoping if you allow the East End side to have a green light for a few seconds longer when the Twin Oaks side is red it can ease up a lot of the congestion.

I am hoping we can get this done ASAP.
Thank you.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

I reached out to the county engineer this morning and asked him to have the timing adjusted to help with traffic flow.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Dear Mayor Coles,

Does the city have any plans to put a stop sign on Clifton by Seventh Street? There are always a lot of cars coming from Seventh Street, and it is very hard to see the cars driving on Clifton due to the parked cars. Also, during busy times, Seventh Street can get very backed up, especially after second seder with a lot of cars coming from BMG.

Thanks,

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

I will ask traffic & safety to evaluate this intersection.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Dear Mr Mayor,

During leaf cleaning season, the practice of leaving leaves in the street has turned our street into a very thin one lane road and taken away almost all the street parking. Is there a better solution for lead removal?

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

We are devising a plan to increase the frequency of leaf pickup throughout town, but to concentrate on those areas with large amount of mature tress which cause such large concentrations

Question:

Dear Mayor Coles,

Thanks so much for everything that you do for Lakewood, and for making this forum possible.

We live in Prospect Park off of Prospect Street. The exit of our development is Prospect and Summers/Capital Lane. It is a four way intersection. Each direction has cars, and busses turning in three directions (Straight, right and left). That is 12 maneuvers at the intersection. There are schools in the area and multitudes of residences. Particularly during busy time, it can be a real weave of many cars, in a rush, trying to go in many directions. And the weave also decreases the ability of the drivers that are making their various turns, from being able to see the other cars going in whatever direction they may be.

Accidents are happening. Would it by any chance please be possible to give this attention, and perhaps try to solve? Perhaps a crossing guar during busy times, or a traffic light would help?

Thanks so much for everything and allowing us to write!

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thank you for writing.

I have forwarded this to traffic & safety and to our engineer. We will also involve the county engineer, since it is their road.

Question:

Hi thank you for this forum. I’m wondering if there’s any way to put a turning light up on the intersection of Prospect Street and Williams. Coming northbound from Williams, cars have to wait a long time in the middle of the intersection to make a left turn and there is no room for a car going straight to go around it. This causes a big backup at traffic times.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

I will ask our engineer to reach out op the count and see if we can get a turn light added.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Hi. It is super dark on Somerset Ave. Is it possible to put more lights especially across from cabinfield circle? There is a school there, busses let children off there and cars come around the curve fast and it’s really scary to cross the street.

Thanks for your care and concern for our safety.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning. I will ask engineering to add some lighting there.
