Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: D’zio Park

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Good afternoon,

I wanted to ask about the park on the corner of Locust and New Hampshire.

First off, thank you for the amazing playground that was installed. My question is in regards to the trees that were planted there last summer. They were planted down the third base line very close to the baseball field and numerous people have gotten hurt running into the trees. I’m not sure whose idea it was to plant 50 trees ten feet off the foul line but if they could be removed and placed in another area of the park, I think that would be much safer moving forward. Thank you in advance.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,
Phil from Public Works went out to inspect the fields. He measured everything & the closest trees are 30 feet from the foul lines. That being said, he noted that there are a lot if improvements that can be done to the field and he will have a crew get started on them, as soon as the storm cleanup is complete. The result will be a much better field, realigned with foul lines that are even further from the trees.
Thank you for your questions.

  1. When is town hall opening for the public?? Zoning and Planning board meetings need to be open.. Toms River and surrounding towns are open! Why is Lakewood closed?? All stored are open so why is City Hall closed??

  2. They put in a beautiful new park there but the 2 slides are very dangerous as they’re almost all straight and extremely steep.
I’ve watched many children get really hurt going down the slides.
    Thank you
