Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles Responds to Your ‘Ask The Mayor’ Questions: Disturbing

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to AskTheMayor@thelakewoodscoop.com.

Question:

Hi,

I came upon this very disturbing scene today. The woman pictured (i asked her if i can take this picture before i took it) was trying to navigate around what appears to be a new light pole base and got stuck in the sand. 911 was called to assist. It’s not fair that this sidewalk is 70% obstructed. What would have happened if her chair tipped while trying to get around? FYI, this base has been like this for a very long time. Maybe over a year already. I hope there is a way to get this fixed quickly.

Thanks for your dedication to our town,

Eli

Response from Mayor Coles:

Eli

Thanks for letting me know about this. I’ve asked our engineer to get in touch with the state DOT and see how quickly we can get this taken care of

Ray

  1. A better question to ask the state DOT, is why they are sticking all the new traffic lights in middle of sidewalks.
I see this up and down Route 9. Then they have the sidewalk zigzag around everything. From electric poles to hydrants, etc.

  2. If someone is using a walker, or a mother pushing a baby carriage, that’s not enough space. They would also have to go around . Why not put it closer to the curb?

  3. To me this looks like it was originally placed in the wrong spot in error and then corrected where it is now in the foreground – but the base was never removed. (who would put a pole in the middle of the sidewalk???)
