Question:
Dear Mr. Mayor,
I would like to comment how much I enjoy the Ask The Mayor column on the Lakewood Scoop and seeing the responses. It was really nice for the mayor to reach out to the community and at the same time it is educational to have a sneak peek on how government and politics works.
Now, I am a professional school bus driver and I have a concern about cul de sacs. Since some of my routes caters to very young children and as such the law requires us to do house stops which some of those is situated on streets that end in a cul de sac. After, I drop off the student I enter to cul de sac to turn around so I can re-enter the main roadway. The issue is some of the cul de sacs are very small and very difficult for a full size school bus to safely back up and turn around in the circle without damaging the cars or trucks parked on the cul de sacs. One street on my routes has signs that says NO PARKING AT ANYTIME, but vehicles park there regardless making my job more difficult and losing precious time to make to my other routs on time that would follow. Would the mayor be able to do something about this?

I really enjoy doing the column as well. If you can get me the name of the streets you are having trouble with, I will ask the chief to do some educational enforcement to start. Hopefully that will help lessen the problem.

Confused, educational enforcement to teach people not to park in no parking areas?
They park there because the cul de sacs were built with inadequate parking. The residents arent able to find other parking within reasonable distance from their homes. Of course at the time of approval the “professionals” testified that there was adequate parking. The board continues to trust the same professionals even after they’ve been shown to be off the mark time and again.
The cul de sac used to be 100 foot in diameter, thanks to our Planning Board bowing to the wishes of the Builders and their “experts” they were shrunk to 85 foot diameter,,,,way to protect the residents
85 ft diameter ?!! I wish.
My cul de sac is less than 60′, if that much.
But ur right, the planning board must do a study how much the buses need to turn around, without going in reverse and stick to it.

I know how you feel. I drove a bus in town for 4+ years. once the cul de sac is cleared try pulling in towards the curb on the left side and turn following the curb line till you complete the turn. this usually works without going into reverse at all
When I was a kid I lived on a cul de sac (a very large one) and the busses NEVER came down.
Quarter mile walk to the bus stop every single day!!

we go into cul de sac when we are dropping little children. I am in Seapoint in the afternoon off of Ocean ave . There are always cars parked,and there is a sign NO PARKING, toys garbage cans etc. The Bus Driver need help.

The people ignoring the signs that say no parking will get warnings one time. That is what Mayor Coles means by educational enforcement. At the same time, can the bus driver pull into a driveway and then back out, aiming his bus in a way to drive straight out of the cul de sac? I agree that they make roads much too small for big vehicles to move in easily, but it can be done. The roads have to be accesible to big vehicles, its part of the fire code I think.
