Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles Responds to Your ‘Ask The Mayor’ Questions: Clover, Vine, County Line, West Gate, Ridge Paving

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi,

The clover area is extremely backed up at rush hour times as it connects Cedarbridge and Route 88. Many vehicles use Laurel Ave as a short cut to and from Clover and the 88. Many times vehicles block the intersection of Laurel and Clover which do not allow cars to cross over or make turns. Can you please install a “no block box” at this intersection?

Still hoping for improvement at the Route 88/Clover intersection

Response from Mayor Coles:

I will ask the engineer to see if we can put this in.

I agree about Clover & 88 as well as the intersection at Cedarbridge

We are trying to work with the state and county to implement much needed improvements

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Thanks for all you do. Is a light planned for Vine & Pine? Since Vine was completed between Cedarbridge & Pine, it has become a great alternative going south but difficult to turn left from Vine onto Pine.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

Yes there is a light planned to go there. We are waiting on final approvals to get it installed.

Question:

Dear Mayor,

Every morning, on the way to Yeshiva, I wait patiently [sometimes, impatiently] to make a left turn from East End Ave onto E County Line Road. During peak hours, I can sit through 5 to 6 green lights until I ultimately make the turn. This seems to be an issue, but an issue that can be fixed.

Is it possible to have the engineers take a look, to see if they could perhaps install a left turn signal over there?

I appreciate it,

Yehuda

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

The county is in the process of putting together a circulation plan for County Line & Kennedy. I will ask them to publish any information they have available.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Hi!

Can an electronic no turn on red sign be placed at the intersection of Hillside Blvd and Lakewood-New Egypt Rd to be activated together with the left turn signal?

Response from Mayor Coles:

I will ask engineering to try to get that done.

Ray

Question:

Thank you mr. Mayor for everything. I am a bus driver for years and it is getting worse. The whole ridge area should be looked at especially Dewey Avenue and ridge Avenue.

Thank you so much

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thanks for helping to safety transport our children.

That area of Ridge is scheduled for major paving upgrades soon.

Ray

  1. Why in the world should there be a no-turn signal by hillside and new egypt??
And why would the mayor just say yes????
Mayor, can I have a burger and fries with that?

    • That person is asking for a no turn on red arrow ONLY when the green left turn arrow IS ON for the east bound left turning traffic. It’s a very valid request. To avoid delays and accidents with the left turning drivers who have the right of way when the left turn arrow is green!

    • Read the question again. The request is for an electronic signal to be activated simultaneously with the left turn signal. Not asking for right turn on red to be totally banned, just while the left turn signal is active.
I’ve seen many near accidents occur as someone tries to turn right into Westgate while the right-of-way belongs to the cars turning left into Westgate

  2. Why is there a disconnect between our town and the county?

Why are there roads in a town that ONLY the county has a say on how to manage it?

The “county” blame game is a major problem!

Most of the traffic issues in Lakewood are blamed on the county, consequently (virtually) NOTHING is being done to alleviate the problems

    Outrageous!

      • And it’s a big problem!!!!

The people in the town should have a say regarding all roads that run through the town, especially if its a road that is majority used by the folks in the town.

The 9 in Lakewood or County line or Cedar bridge or Cross Road are very much roads that are used by the towns people. The town should be able to expand it to 2 or more lanes, set the traffic lights so it’s helps the traffic in town, plow snow when it’s beneficial for the townspeople etc.

        It’s a no brainer!

If the town would have put their foot down they would have gotten legislation that would have permitted this. But NO ONE REALLY CARES!!!

It’s much easier to blame the county than fix the issues!

  3. Why should there be a no block box on Clover so this self absorbed spazz can cut in front of other drivers who aren’t speeding down residential streets to get around a 2 minute intersection ?

  4. Dear Mayor Coles,
Thank you for all you do.
I have a personal request I’d like to ask you to help me with.
Around 10 years ago I developed an addiction to sofas. 3-seat, 2-seat, sectionals as well as Ottomans. Over the years I kept adding more & more sofas anywhere I had an inch of free space. The kitchen, living room, dining room, hallways, bedrooms & bathrooms are all covered in sofas.
My problem is after putting these sofas everywhere there is no free room to move. We keep bumping into each other constantly & sometimes have to wait 3-4 minutes for the person on the other side of the room to pass through the maze of sofas. Mornings are a nightmare as my 10 children make their way through the living room often missing their bus.
My request is can you please send over an engineer to figure out, without removing any sofas, how we can move around in our house like other people do?
    Thank you,
    Shmuel “The Sofa” Shlimeil
    Vestgate

  5. Dear Mayor..can you look into installing traffic lights at every intersection in town because I don’t believe there’s an intersection left that isn’t back up at some point in the day even in the early morning hours..also can you ask the planning board if it’s possible to build more homes and schools I did see a couple of vacant lots in town and Ocean County Park is always an option and we do need more shopping areas so people can walk to the stores and thereby elevate some traffic
