Question:
Hi Mayor Coles,
Thank you for all that you do for Lakewood!
The left turn going from Chestnut onto New Hampshire can get very backed up, with dozens of cars waiting to turn. I was wondering if it is possible to make another turning lane going into the second lane in New Hampshire.
It’s a little hard to describe so just to clarify: there is room for 2 lines of cars on Chestnut to fit side by side- those turning left and right. I am suggesting that cars that want to turn left can also go in the right lane where white lines will direct them to turn left into the second lane onto New Hampshire.
Thank you!
Response from Mayor Coles:
Thanks for your suggestions. We bring up the conditions at this intersection with the county at every meeting we have with them. The redesign of the intersection is complete. It will include an additional lane as well as a traffic light at the corner. The problem has been coordination between the county & state. Due to the proximity of Rt 70 to Chestnut, the state also has jurisdiction over what can be done. I am continually assured they are very close to final approvals and then the job can be bid out. I will ask our engineer to follow up with them again and see if there is any new information as to when this will begin.
Thanks,
Ray

This intersection from hell needs a fix asap, we’ve been hearing the same excuse every time… The county, the city, the state, the country, the WHO chairman, the Montefiore ceo, shomrim, cross guards, everyone needs to coordinate on this corner.
How about local police manning it till then? Cross guards? People get injured there every week!
Until the county wakes up the Township needs to put our people to man the intersection
This is probably one of the worst intersections both for new Hampshire and especially chestnut.
There already is a second turning lane there. As long as you consider yourself to be in a bigger rush than everyone else, are obviously a much better driver than everyone else, and don’t care to be extremely reckless you can just make a left turn from the shoulder.
The project has actually already been bid out.
The road work was previously held up by an adjoining property owner who did not sign off on the acquisition of the necessary right of way. The matter went to court and the parties have ultimately settled.
County officials now anticipate commencing construction this coming fall.
I’ve seen the layout for that intersection. If you are going north on New Hampshire and want to make a left onto Chestnut – you have to make a right onto the jughandle and go west on Rt70. Then you cross over
New Hampshire and then make another right onto the present jughandle, which will be connecting with Chestnut, not New Hampshite. There will be a traffic light at New Hampshire & Chestnut for those who want to make a left to go north on New Hampshire.
