The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question:
Good Day, Mr. Mayor:
I’ve been in town now for a few months, and find it hard to believe that the New Hampshire- Chestnut st. intersection doesn’t have a traffic light! I hate to say it’s an accident waiting to happen as sadly it’s surely happened already. I drive on alternate routes, as do many people I know, just to avoid the death leap of having to turn left there onto N.H.
Please let the community know when a light can be installed there. Thank you!
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good evening. There are plans to add a light at this intersection as well as redesign the entire N. Hampshire Rt 70 intersection. I am constantly asking the county the status of this. They did tell me that the final design has been approved. Now we can begin pushing them to get the work started.
Thanks
Ray

only a new guy in town would be naive enough to think that anything in this town would get done
Once they are effectively redirecting the jug handle to Chestnut, a portion of that now unused space should be used to widen both Chestnut and New Hampshire in that stretch.
Chestnut should have 2 lanes on the right side with turning to that development, and the left side should have 3 lanes (or maybe even 4) to make it easier to get from route 70 and chestnut onto New Hampshire.
New Hampshire should also be widened to have 2 turning lanes onto Route 70, just between the new light and Route 70.
I’ve witnessed too many accidents in this area. Adding these lanes in the space that’s not going to be used anymore anyways will ease up the lane switch rush which causes the accidents.
Thank you for considering.
Some simplicity:
When it comes to safety, there shouldn’t be a wait for more then a week-the most!
From a simple view; It definitely seems obvious to require many more traffic lights throughout this city of lakewood. The amount of busy intersections that dont have traffic lights is absolutely absurd!
For example, Why isn’t the highway 9, especially in a school zone, filled with lights! And the 88 from New Hampshire to the 9 (in a 40 mph zone) with just one light!?
Not trying to put blame on anyone rather, just trying to get logic going.
Where’s the safety?
To the writer of the “Letter to the Mayor” — Reference the light you want at Chestnut and New Hampshire to stop accidents. Be advised that a traffic light will not stop accidents there. If you faithfully read the Lakewood Scoop every day you will find that there is about one, maybe two, accidents at the intersection of New Hampshire and Route 70 per week and there is a traffic light at that location. And there are many traffic light controlled intersections in Lakewood that have accidents, mostly by people running the red light. If you want proof just read back through the older pages of the Lakewood Scoop and you will find many videos of just that.
Yes, I have to make a left by this intersection every day and I daven so hard that I should be able to make this left safely. It is really scary!
While were at it, any update on Vermont, Chestnut to Rt 70. Another debacle that’s considered normal around here. Or how about the park on James/Cross Street.
Why do we even bother asking the Mayor when it’s always the County or State.
What about no left turns at these dangerous intersections. Much cheaper…
Is a light really gonna make a difference? Or is it gonna back up the traffic? I agree maybe no left turns..also nobody sees the signs that there’s a no left turn into ExxonMobil and it cause I bit of angry people
Build more developments! The more traffic the slower the speeds, & the fewer the accidents. Problem solved!
