Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Changing our street name

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to AskTheMayor@thelakewoodscoop.com.

Question:

Dear Mayor,

Thank you for your work on behalf of our community. I live on a small block called Ridge Fourth street which many Lakewood have never heard of. It is also right near Ridge avenue. This has caused a lot of confusion and aggravation. Mail and other packages have been delivered to Ridge avenue, service providers often go to Ridge avenue instead of our street, and even school bus drivers get confused and wind up on Ridge avenue. I was wondering how we could get the name of our street changed to alleviate the confusion.

Thank you,

A Ridge Fourth street resident

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

It is never an easy to change a street name, particularly when there are houses already on it. The first step would be to start a petition and hope that every resident agrees with you and is willing to allow the change. If you can get that, we can then go to the post office and get permission.
The hard part may be getting everyone to agree on the new name! If this is something you want to proceed with, please contact my office and we will be happy to help where we can.

Ray

  1. I have the problem quite often with just the “number” even though the street name is different . My mail gets to someone a block away and vise verse
If the 2 addresses are people that can communicate (I.e. honest) then your at least getting the mail . If not …..

  2. As I have commented in the past on this forum, why don’t developers and Builders name the new streets after Fallen firefighters, police officers and emt personnel? It will be a tremendous Kiddush Hashem. For those of you that don’t know, in the early 1950s when the town of new Square were naming their streets the founders wanted to name it after different cities in Russia and Poland. The post office put up a fight stating that we cannot pronounce or read these names. They asked the previous sqevera Rebbe what to do and he told them to name it after presidents of the United States to show hakoras hatov for this wonderful country. it’s a shame that there’s only one development in Lakewood that has that.

  3. I suggest the township have a better process when approving street names the first time around.

This is not the first time that a street name needed to be changed.

  4. RE: Ridge 4th st Resident , You missed out the most important issue regarding your street name. If there is an emergency on your block & first responders go to ridge ave that can be someones life on the line. based on this reasoning the township or post office should be more forthcoming to get the street name changed in order to prevent such a mistake from happening no body wants to see death or a house burned down because first responders went to the wrong address
