Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles Responds to Your ‘Ask The Mayor’ Questions: Cedarbridge & New Hampshire, Speed Bumps

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to AskTheMayor@thelakewoodscoop.com.

Question:

Dear Mr mayor,

Thank you for your help with everything in Lakewood. I was thinking due to the large amount of accidents at cedarbridge and new Hampshire avenues maybe the light can be adjusted similar to Route 88 and New Hampshire that while the cars are going straight the turn signal is red so there won’t be that last second dash to make the turn when the light is turning red which is when most of the accidents happen?

Thank you,
Yaakov

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

The county is in the planning stages to rework most of the interchanges along Cedarbridge from Hurley to the Brick border. That will be a time-consuming project, but I am sure it will bring needed relief to many who travel Cedarbridge every day.

In the meantime, I have asked the county engineer to see if they can adjust the timing at Cedarbridge to make things a bit safer.

Question:

Hi,
Thank you for taking time to answer questions to the community. Is there any way we can have speed bumps put it in Martin Luther king? The whole street is residential family’s living there, And three cars cones speeding releasing their vent up traffic frustrations. It’s become very difficult for home owners to get out of their driveways and quite a number of accidents have happened.

Thank You!

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

I will ask Traffic and Safety to look into ways to calm traffic flow.

Speed bumps can actually cause more problems than they solve. They are also discouraged by our emergency responders and fire department because they slow down emergency response time.

Ray

  1. speed bumps? your houses on mlk should of demanded proper circular driveways (without allowing so many apartments per house)so you dont have to back onto a large ave,and can instead pull out forward. poor planning by the board again. You cant build house on a major road and expect everyone to stop for you. There is also no parking there, as everyones houses is a down curb, and fed ex and repair men have no where to park there, seriously where should they park? dont be upset when they block your driveway they have no choice

  2. Why not have the Police just give tickets to those who are speeding instead of speed bumps? Trust me there won’t be any more speeding.
    Yours truly
    Common sense

      • Really? What data do you have?
        Such ignorance…
It’s people like you who need tickets. Can you explain to me how tickets wouldn’t deter people from driving safer? I’m not sure if you are familiar with the points system in NJ. The way it works is when you do a moving violation you get a certain amount of points. Once you have too many points, your license is suspended.
That means anyone driving unsafely who will generally end up getting tickets will not be on the roads… making the roads much safer. Also people don’t like to get tickets period (it sounds like you don’t either) It costs time & money sometimes even a Lawyer. That’s called a deterrent. A way to make people think twice about how they drive. And guess what? People will not speed.as much…

  3. why dont people ask him the actual question that needfs to be asked.
how can a town thats bringing in over half a billion dollars in real estate tax, not widen any roads. why are there so many shoulders, its so easy to alleviate all yes all the traffic in lakewood and it wouldnt even cost 100 million not even 40 million, yet we suffer. suffering in silencce. like a bunch of brainless sheep, sitting in traffic on hope road, massachussets, cross, countly line, miller road, central ave, new hampshire. sheep
