Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Cedarbridge and Avenue of the States

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Thank you so much for adding the traffic light at Cedarbridge and Avenue of the States. It has made it possible to made a left on to Cedarbridge, without having to bet on your life.

Yet, there is still traffic backup in the turning lane(on Ave of the States, waiting to turn left onto Cedarbridge). Sometimes it can take 3 or 4 lights to make the turn.
An easy cost efficient solution is to allow turning left from both lanes. This can be done with minimal changes to the signage. It also would require lane stripping to guide the turn for both lanes. But it still is a great traffic improvement, with a reasonable price tag.
Thank you,
Meir K.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thanks Meir.
It sounds like a very good idea.  I will ask our folks to look into it.
Ray

  1. The lanes on William’s at the light from William’s to prospect are kinda confusing. Left lane is left turn and straight and right lane is right turn only. I see people in the right lane go straight and almost cause accidents daily.

  2. Makes more sense, and probably no cost at all, to simply lengthen the green light time. Right lane traffic can still flow and left lane traffic will have more time to make it through.

  3. 35mph on Ave of the States could be maybe 45. No one goes 35 there. More like 55. Great location for cat and mouse speed trap. Plenty of room to line them up.

  4. Steve. The lanes on williams and prospect are indeed very confusing, Going south on williams towards prospect, when you get to the light, the right lane is designed for “right turn only” and the left turn is for the ones making a left onto prospect, and going straight on williams. I drive there daily, and cross over prospect, I find it very unfair that I have to wait behind ten never turning cars (who are making a left) for me to go straight. Why can’t I be on the right lane if I need to go straight? as far as I know there is no other such intersection in the entire town that the right lane is designed for a right turn only, other than the intersection of oak and new hampshire. Also, for safety reasons, if you’re familiar with the layout of that intersection, williams st once it crosses prospect it curves to the left, that means if you need to go straight and you’re on the left lane, you’re going head on with incoming traffic! Not to mention the drivers who don’t obey the rules and use the right lane to go straight, catching you off guard almost causing an accident while two cars drive straight into a bottle neck tight street. I would like to ask the Mayor if the williams/ prospect intersection can be corrected to the left lane for ones turning left only, and right lane for all other traffic. Thank you.

  5. Sorry, I agree with the others that this would be a very bad idea as even more cars will be backed up, prevented from turning right. A much simpler and FREE solution is re-timing the lights, allowing the left turn another 10 seconds or so.

  6. I do not doubt that all the requests are helpful but i am still wondering why a left hand turn from east and west Kennedy Blvd on to rt 9 has not been put into effect. Has anyone who is in charge been asked to do a study of this?

  7. @genius well said , except that if the right lane is used for going straight, then you wouldn’t be able to turn right onto prospect on a red, as you would be blocked by someone wanting to go straight on Williams.

I think when they designed that intersection, they assumed that most traffic reaching prospect would be turning right or left, not going straight. It is probably still the case.
Nevertheless that intersection should be properly aligned.

  8. Very very very bad idea…. Currently the only way out of the Pine Street mess without sitting in traffic is that right turn…. Many many people utilize that right turn on red.. Turning that into a left turn only would turn the whole intersection into a parking lot… Longer green a much much better idea… Or shorter red… Maybe it’s me but that red light seems to me as the longest red in town…

  9. Actually, the amount of cars making a right is a small percentage. Besides, for those making a right there is an alternative, to go from Pine onto New Hampshire. While for those going left, there is no alternative.

  10. Simple solution for Avenue of the States and Cedarbridge Ave.
Add a third lane on the right for those turning right. Property is owned by the town so it should not be too hard to pull off.

  11. Actually there are a lot of people that make a right… You just can’t tell because they’re not sitting there.. They make their turn and leave..my guesstimate is its about 50/50
Pine st to New Hampshire is “Not” an alternative and by suggesting that you’ve made it clear you don’t frequent /live in the neighborhood… That light gets backed up way past Albert in the am and it can take 3-4 greens to make it through
