Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Car sharing program for Lakewood

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Dear Mr mayor!

As we all know, there is a traffic problem in our town and our mayor is doing everything in his power to enhance the driving conditions in our town. As we know, there are many cities around the world that have implemented a car sharing program which decreases the traffic because instead of every family owning 2 cars they can use the the car2go (which is usually a small vehicle) whenever there is a need.

Can we by any chance consider this in our “city” as well! Thanks again for everything you have done to improve and enhance this city.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Morris,

It is an interesting idea. I am not familiar with how the system works, whether it is fully private, like a car rental company, or if it requires some type of municipal cooperation. We are also looking into the possibility of using Uber or Lyft to provide rides as an adjunct to public transportation like some cities around the country have done. Thanks for bringing this up. We will look into it.

  1. Wow! what a brainstorm we should get this rolling asap. Why do we have to spend all that $ on a second car and clog up the whole town when we could use a car2go when we really need that second car?

  2. Bike sharing like the city bikes in the city is all we need. With a dozen bike stations all over..
I think it’s the magic formula we need.
Anyone want to take it on??

    • Most cars on the road have kids in them, so while bikes might help, it’s not going to solve the problem.

The real problem is this town has the infrastructure for 20,000 people but has 100,000 living here. I don’t htink its really solveable.

  3. go look at all the politics in manhattan with all the fines they want to impose on every car with all the sharing ideas including car2go uber lyft and so on the traffic just gets worst dont try it

  4. Suggestions:

    1. Residents who moved here after 2013, as noted by plate sticker, should not be permitted to drive solo between 9am and 4pm.

    2. If someone is driving to the tune of their own drummer and they are not on their way to learn or to work, they may only do so on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays or be ticketed with a hefty fine to be paid to up to two drivers who were behind them.
