Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles Responds to Your ‘Ask The Mayor’ Questions: All-day Noise, Ocean County Park, Ticks

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi,

Thank you so much for all you do serving the Lakewood community.

I wanted to reach out about Pine Park. I live nearby & on every Saturday afternoon in the summer, there is nonstop loud music for hours with an annoying base that literally vibrates the community.

I know people are entitled to play music, however Saturday afternoon is a time where many people nap in the community & relax & the music is nonstop. If it would be for an hour or two, we’d manage. The issue is, they are playing it from noon till about 8pm. Is there anything that can be done?

Thank you!

Response from Mayor Coles:

I will ask our parts department to inform folks that while they are allowed to play music at their events, it has to be kept at a level that does not disturb the residents around the park

Question:

Dear mayor,

Firstly Thank you for giving us a platform to adress our concerns. I know this is a county issue but perhaps by you making the request something can be done. Our family loves making use of the wonderful amenities that Lakewood offers. We often hike the trails of the local paths, boat, bike and what not. The other day my kids had an amazing time playing frisbee golf at ocean county park. In the rush of locating the frisbees and getting out, and kids being kids, they forgot to spray bug spray on themselves. This was by far not the first time my kids have ended up in a forest for hours “unplanned” without bug spray. Therefore I am vigilant about reminding them to at least check for ticks each night. They are well trained, sometimes finding, usually not. What we found that evening was beyond normal. If I have to guess I would say at least 20 ticks per kid. Likely much more. Hours and hours of looking/finding them. These ticks were so small, I would compare them to finely ground black pepper. Had my kids not be so well trained they would have never found them. Each one we found I said it can’t be, it’s just dust. But they were literally dust specks with legs.

I’m grateful my kids found them, and feel so lucky that they’re so vigilant on this matter. But it frightens me to think of untrained families who may go enjoy the park and frisbee golf and not scrutinize themselves as deeply as we did.
Is there any way to

1. Mow the grass around the frisbee golf pathway to avoid the ticks hanging there.

2. Spray that pathways with a tick
killer/repeller.

3. Have signs around the park, and near the frisbee golf reminding guests of the danger of ticks and the importance of repellent sprays.

Thank you for all you do for us all.

Response from Mayor Coles:

I am glad your children found the ticks. I know how devastating Lyme disease can be. One of my children had it.

I forwarded your email, along with my own request to the county and asked them to look into it

Ray

This town is not just for us, just because our community likes to nap during the day on shabbos, doesn’t mean everyone else needs to work around us. We can’t control everything and everyone. There’s enough hate as it is
