Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Albert/Bellinger danger

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question: Hi, Our neighborhood is having constant issues with the new Bellinger Street. The cars are coming out of the developments onto Bellinger Street and then turning onto oncoming Albert Avenue traffic. There is a stop sign there, but it didn’t prevent the dozens of accidents and hundreds of near accidents which have occurred.

Parents are too worried for their children to use the new sidewalk to walk to school because of this particular intersection. The nearby house had to get barriers, to prevent the car accidents from going into their yard again. This is not ok.

I don’t know the solution, but there must be a better way.

Looking forward to hearing your response,

A concerned neighbor.

Response from Mayor Coles: Good morning,

I asked the Chief to have Traffic & Safety and our engineering department to look into the area and come up with some solutions.

Dozens of accidents? Hundreds of near misses? I live there and I don’t know what you’re talking about!

This has to be fixed urgently before a casualty happens!
Way to many close accidents and children are afraid to use the sidewalks around a resident block because of extra activity coming from the opening of Bellinger street which is used from many extra cars leading into a private block.
Please make Bellinger street heading into yesoide a one way street only

Yes I live there and I personally witnessed the aftermath of at least 12 to 15 accidents there.

I live near that corner. Since that development was opened that corner became a disaster. Also New Hampshire in Ballinger Street became a disaster when that development opened. Possibly the solution would be to close the entrance to the development from that intersection, because before that development was opened there never ever was any issues on that corner.

The entrance to that new development must be closed indefinitely. That development is causing all the problems in the Albert neighbored. Besides all of the traffic/hazardous conditions on that corner. The traffic on Bellinger Street became crazy and it’s only getting worse now because of all the additional construction on Sims Way and Lakewood Cummons most namely. Bellinger Street in New Hampshire Ave. Has become nuts. It’s unsafe to turn onto New Hampshire Ave. right or left from Bellinger Street besides there’s a build up of usually 5 to 10 cars even off-peak time. There are many accidents in that intersection as well because of people making a left turn from Astor chocolate onto New Hampshire. The only real solution for all of this is if the entrance to that development from Albert ave. development is CLOSED!

There are no curbs in the area, and cars are constantly jumping the corners and side walks because that little street (1 block long) is too narrow, and became a thoroughfare to thousands of new residents do to all the new developments including schools and yeshivas there causing a deathly situation for the locals and the many kids who live there.
