Question:
Dear Mayor Coles,
I am impressed at how you handle things in so many areas to the benefit of Lakewood residents.
My concern is the intersection at Massachusetts and Cross Street, a very active area where cars approach the light at high speed due to the fact that three of the streets meeting there are long streets with no stop signs or traffic lights slowing them down and two of the approaches are downhill.
Since I arrived here some four months ago, there have been at least 3 major traffic accidents which took place at that crossroads.
Plain and simple, we need a left turn signal installed with a delayed green so that people making a left turn will be able to do so safely.
You have two senior citizen resident communities, Fairways and Enclave, with more than 1,500 homes, that must use this light many times each day.
Please have this checked out as soon as possible. Many lives depend upon it.
Thank you.
Response from Mayor Coles:
Thank you for writing. I will ask our engineers to ask the county to install a turn signal.
Ray

Yes, whenever I have to turn left from Massachusetts Ave. into Cross St., I am ultra careful because you can’t see if a car is coming straight at you from the other direction. Turning lanes should be painted there too.
I’ve been saying this for years. I used to have to use this on a daily basis and I was always fearful when making a left from Massachusetts to Cross (towards the 9) when another car is trying to make a left from the opposite direction (Massachusetts from Enclave to Cross away from the 9) and is blocking the view to see if any other cars are coming.
Can I get fries with that?
Great News Mayor Ray!
The requested left turning arrows are already on their way.
The Ocean County Board of Commissioners recently awarded a $5.45 million contract for the reconstruction of Cross Street from Route 9 to Augusta Boulevard.
This massive project will widen this entire stretch of Cross Street with a center left turn lane.
The project will further improve the signalized intersection of Cross Street & Massachusetts Avenue with a third lane on each side of Cross Street, as well as a new traffic signal with dedicated left turns in all approaches!
How would the turning lane help fix the problem mentioned?
