Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Accident Victim

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi Mr. Mayor,

I was seriously injured a while back and still suffer daily from an auto accident caused by someone making an illegal left turn. Unfortunately, I see illegal left turns daily. Sad to say, not just from cars but from school buses as well. I would like to bring to your attention the area Majestic Street and James Street. The entrance to that development from James Street is a right in and a right out (not for through traffic though). However, I see lines of cars during rush hour making left turns in and left turns out. Traffic is already a mess on James Street and this illegal shenanigans doesn’t help. I’m more concerned with the illegal left turns as I know first hand the damage an accident can cause. Can you please assist me in getting police enforcement to this area and other developments or shopping plazas that have the right turn only signs? This seems to be a big issue all over this town.

Thank you,

Auto Accident Victim

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

I asked the chief to have some enhanced enforcement per your request.

Thanks

Ray

  1. Legit a disaster with all the cars so recklessly making the illegal left turns. James is backed up as is. The illegal turning cars make it 100 times worse while they block traffic waiting to turn.

The police were there a while ago and it did help. They cant always be there. It is now worse than ever. Especially with the new traffic light there.

What i would like to recommend is placing some sort of barrier there to prevent the illegal turns. Someone, please do something before someone gets seriously hurt there.

  2. as someone who lives on the block, I actually think they should make it a gated entrance for residents of the development and emergency vehicles ONLY

      • You seem to not realize that Majestic is actually a private development, and people who don’t live there are not supposed to use the road as a cut-through. So yes, a gated entrance does make sense for this street, more than other streets in Lakewood that are not private developments

        • Majestic way is a public street.
The houses were not build by public money but by a private developer. This does not make Majestic way a private street.
With your reason every street that was build by a developer can be gated. Lets start with Hillside I don’t want everyone who is not a West Gate resident to use that street as a Cross Street.

        • When the development was proposed to the Planning board, the developer testified that by making another road parallel to Williams allowing traffic to get from James to Prospect they will be improving the area.

And no – its not a private road.

  3. Make it into a legal left turn. Rediculous that Williams is the only through street between Prospect & James. All those cars are trying to avoid the bottleneck at Williams & James. Why is there no other cross street between these two very busy parallel streets? Was any intelligent planning considered when this side of town was developed over the last 10 years?

  4. There is zero reason it’s illegal to make that left turn I do it all the time and it’s very safe! especially now that the red light stops the traffic at the railway tracks!
I’ll be happy to meet with this victim and show him this is not the same case as his accident and he should not ruin 100s of families lives that live here and are literally trapped in there development because all other ways are totally backed up and in order to get in you need to go 25 minutes out of your way!
    So selfish wow
We need better traffic planning now!

    • This! It’s absolutely awful to live on the block because of this. You can easily have to wait 7-10 minutes to make a left out onto prospect st, nobody lets you go, only to be hit with a 25 min bottleneck on Williams at going all the way past Buttell. All of this just to get to James/NPGS/Sunset! It’s no wonder us residents of this development use that left turn from Railroad onto James multiple times daily. Mr. Mayor, it’s always good to hear both sides of a story before sending loads of undercover cops to upset residents, as you did today. Maybe you can try to make life more possible to live here for everyone, not just one complainer who isn’t faced with this issue multiple times a day? We have plenty of people who live on the block who would be happy to speak to you and make it work for everyone

      • You should have researched the traffic in the area prior to moving to majestic. There is nobody to blame other than yourselves.

That being said, an illegal left turn is illegal. Regardless of how much traffic you are avoiding.

The light on williams is doing wonders for williams street. James street would be great if all the people ILLEGALLY turning left would stop blocking the flow of traffic.

Wr need daily police enforcement at this critical intersection.

  5. When I saw the ‘no left turn’ sign installed by the entrance of majestic way & james, I laughed. There was no way drivers wouldn’t take advantage of an opportunity of having a quicker way to bypass Lakewood’s horrible traffic. This town is starved of cross streets. In my opinion, any future planned cul-de-sacs should be abolished unless it ends in a cliff/body of water. Existing ones should be opened if at all physically possible. That is the only way to make traffic bearable again.

  6. As far as illegal left turns is concerned, on Madison Ave. it is illegal to make left turns from the side streets into Madison, or to go straight across Madison Ave. during daytime hours, but people do it all the time and that is dangerous to people going straight on Rte. 9.
