Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Abusive Park Rangers

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Speaking of the Rangers in the park. My two kids were on a Segway and the ranger screamed at them that it’s not allowed in the park.

She then proceeded to follow them in her vehicle at a close and dangerous distance to make sure they put the segways in the car.

I understand that our park rules, but there is a way to enforce it.

My kids refused to go back to the park.

The rangers are abusive and anti Semitic and take their job a little too seriously.

We were going to press charges but didn’t. The story with the poor family trying to take pictures reminded me of that incident.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi,

I am very upset and sorry for what your family went through. Could you possibly give me the date and approximate time when this happened. It is not acceptable. I am going to raise this situation with the OC commissioners. At the very least, they need to do some training for their employees.

The parks are there for our enjoyment. The rangers and other employees are there to make sure we are safe and to maintain the grounds. I have had many positive experiences with county parks employees over the years. I know there are many stressful stations that arise in the course of their duties. But being verbally abusive is not acceptable.

Thanks for writing

Ray

  1. I was in the ocean county park on the 88, and someone got injured. A private EMS service responded, and the ranger said they need permission to enter the park. What non-sense.
The park rangers sit in the park all day with nothing to do. When they have an opportunity to interact, they go all out on a power trip .

  2. It seems the writer is ticked off because she ignored the rules of the park and allowed her kids to use their Segways. Where I lived she would have been given a ticket.

  3. It bears saying that our community also needs some training in derech eretz. I think being mean and being “anti-Semitic” are two very different things.

  4. To Rabbi Rabbinical, you’re 100% right. We need a park ranger to pursue a high speed chase against a 9yr old boy pushing a baby in a carriage with a Segway. How dare the kid does that?? It’s outrageous!!
We should be thankful that the Park Security guard didn’t shoot the kids and stayed 8 ft behind them with her car.
Any other community and the Guard would be in the Hospital and or indicted for child endangerment but we are too Aidel … and of course chillul Hashem so we become an easy target for these losers.
