Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles on the Deer Population in Lakewood

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Is there anything that can be done about all the deer that are running around town? They’re eating all the plants in front of our houses and bringing deer ticks which carry Lyme disease into our community.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

We do not have any means to control the deer population in the area.

There are several things you can do to discourage them from foraging by your home. First is to plant deer resistant plants in your yard. If they do not have anything they want to eat, they will likely pass by. I lost many plants and shrubs over the years until I discovered this. Most nursery and garden stores will either label the plant as deer resistant or can help you select them.

While deer ticks are a concern, many other species of tick carry Lyme as well as other diseases. It would be a good idea to have your yard treated by a professional service to spray for ticks, fleas, mosquitos and other pests. I have 2 dogs, and searching them for ticks was a daily ritual until I started treating the yard a few years ago. Since then, there have been almost no instances of finding a tick on one of them or on ourselves.

I hope this helps

Ray

The more woods are turned into housing the more the deer will be around houses.

Oh deer

In Manhattan, this is a terrible problem. They cut down all the woods a while back (cept central park) and thats why you see deer roaming all over the place there.

The more we cut down their woodland homes the more they are forced to encroach on our properties that used to be their roaming grounds. Fyi- I have groundhogs that ate my plants until I found ones that they weren’t interested in…they won’t touch rose of sharon & sedum (for sunny areas). I planted Pachysandra ground cover for shady areas.

There are also sprays(some have a mint smell others have an egg smell so choose wisely) that can be sprayed on plants to help keep them away.

Do you think deer is a unique problem to Lakewood? They are all over New Jersey. The mayor is seriously a nice guy to be taking time out of his day to answer such silly nonsense

In some areas in America the state has a list of experienced & highly competent hunters.
When the deer population gets too large the police close off an area & the hunters each shoot many deer.

Think that is called slaughter…not hunting.

Since the deer population is losing their native woods to development, which is why they’re migrating to our yards, perhaps our town can find some of our taxes to fund a tick spray program, to help protect our residents and save us another heavy expense. As Rockland, NY, funds mosquito spraying to
Avoid West Nile virus.

Thank you for this information! I was just wondering… if you get someone professional to spray for ticks how does it work if the deer come back after the yard is sprayed.

Lakewood Mayor Responds to Deer’s Query About Huge Population of Humans in Lakewood
The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted by a local deer resident, and the Mayor’s response:
Lakewood Deer:Dear Mayor Coles, due to the large population of humans residing in Lakewood township who mow their lawns and leave very little grass for the deer to feed off, the deer community is literally starving!
Ultimately, too large of a human population in Lakewood means less grass and vegetation, and ultimately extreme hunger and intense starvation for the local deer community.
Question: Is there anything that can be done about the huge population of humans who are running around town decimating the deer community’s food supply?
Response from Mayor Coles: Dear Mr./Mrs. Deer, it is beyond my capacity as township Mayor to control the size of Lakewood’s human population. However, you can issue a formal request to all of the local humans to place generous supplies of vegetables on their lawns after they are finished mowing their grass. Additionally, you can always hop on over to one of the local zoos and ask the zookeepers for some nuts or some fruit to eat.
Thanks for taking the time to submit your inquiry. Best of luck to you and the entire local deer community.
Sincerely yours,
Mayor Coles.

Wow, where are the deer going to go? Lakewood is knocking down every patch of Woods to build houses. You have taken away their home to build your home. Hope you are all happy.

The reason for all the deer is actually a MURPHY issue and that is because they passed laws prohibiting the hunting in NJ to e certain extent. That’s why there’s so much deer the last couple years. VOTE REPUBLICAN! Google it

I’m treating my back yard but I have a untreated forest in back of my house owned by the township, I find several ticks a week on my kids, they know not to go in the woods, ticks come on small grass as well.

Dear Ray, We will treat our property but at least the Township should treat their properties, it’s totally out of control.

As long as every car in Lakewood culls at least one deer, the problem will be solved.

Well the way some drive in Lakewood it shouldn’t be a problem.

No my name is not Tzvi or hersh btw

I don’t get it. Deer is kosher to eat, why doesn’t someone start catching all these deer, shechting them, and the stores and restaurants will start selling venison??

I mean, that would really solve the problem in a huge way. Restaurants can even promote the meat by saying that if your name is Tzvi or Hersh (must show ID) then you get one venison steak on the house per lifetime.

Watch how the deer population will come under control and on top of that people will get to enjoy something that right now is only available in one kosher restaurant in Brooklyn (as far as I’m aware).

It can’t be that hard to catch the deer, and they’re so abundant, it would be a shame not to put them to good use. Hashem made deer kosher, why should we not enjoy it??
