A pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle on Route 88 in Brick has been identified as a Lakewood resident, police said.
At approximately 8PM on Sunday evening, a 26-year-old driver was traveling eastbound on Route 88 and had just crossed Old Squan Road when he struck a pedestrian in the lane of travel, police said. The driver stopped his vehicle and pulled to the side of the road. Witnesses to the crash also stopped to render aid and contacted 911.
Brick Township Police Emergency Medical Services along with MONOC Paramedics responded, and transported the pedestrian to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The man was identified as Michael Cappello, of Lakewood.
The initial on-scene investigation revealed the driver was not utilizing his cell phone at the time of the crash, police said. It also appears that speed was not a factor in the crash.
Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office responded to assist in the investigation.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Traffic Safety Unit at (732) 262-1140.
So sad. Rest In Peace.
Will there be a ticket blitz in Brick or toms river? Or only Lakewood is lucky enough?
