Lakewood In Discussion with State to Install Pedestrian Overpasses

Lakewood is in discussion with the State to install pedestrian overpasses in Lakewood, Mayor Ray Coles told TLS in response to an Ask The Mayor question.

A resident submitted the following question:

Dear Mr. Mayor:

I grew up in Miami and on many highways there was an overhead walkway, which allowed people to cross safely (see pic attached). Can something like that be constructed to allow people to safely cross Route 70 from one side to the next?

Mayor Coles answered the following:

Good afternoon,

We are very familiar with the pedestrian overpass you are mentioning. We have been in discussions with the state to install a couple of them in town, one of which would go across Rt. 70.

Thanks for writing

Ray

  1. It’s been talked about before.
Do a search on this site forestr for pedestrian mayor and you’ll get the article written in February 2024

  2. Many people in Lakewood do not use the provided sidewalks. Do you really think they will climb up and then down 17 feet of stairs to cross the street? If you do believe that then I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

  3. They should make a driving overpass from Howell until Toms River to alleviate the traffic. They can put up a $15 toll on it, and put it up for bid.

  4. This will only work if there are escalators or elevators. Yidden hate climbing stairs.
Ever been around Yidden with only steps available?
    Step 1 “OY!”
    Step 2 “OY VEY!”
Step 3 “OY VEY IZ MIR!”
Step 4 (looking how many steps are left) “OY GEVALT!”
Step 5 “I’m not going to make it!”
Step 6 “I think I’m having a heart attack, CALL HATZALAH!!!”

  5. Yes. Especially in the Route 70 area.
    1. Route 70 is very dangerous.
    2. That’s a very Chasidische area of which woman don’t drive & a shortage of female Car service drivers, as a result they do a tremendous amount of walking thus they cross Route 70 constantly which is very very dangerous. ( In Williamsburg there’s plenty of overpasses to cross the BQE & on the BQE vehicles go 3 mph anyway)

  6. amazing how rt 70 and that area gets so much more attention then closer to yeshiva does, unfortunately for us , as they have advocates and we dont

  7. I get such Nachas when I see my letters to the mayor posted.
That photo I attached actually isn’t accurate. They make them with way less stairs or just ramps, that way ladies with strollers or bikes can also cross these highways
