Sources tell YWN that a dump-truck overturned on Interstate 90 Eastbound near exit 43 at approximately 5:00AM. At least 2 private vehicles were involved in the serious collision. (One vehicle was carrying 2 families, & the other was carrying one large family.)

One of the victims realized that there was no Hatzolah in the area, and following a call to 911, contacted Misaskim’s 24hr hotline for assistance.

Misaskim along with Special Assistant to the Superintendent of the NYSP Rabbi Bernard Freilich made many phone calls to the NYSP, the local hospitals, Toronto Hatzolah, numerous family members in Lakewood & Flatbush (NYC) were contacted, and a local Chabad Rabbi in Rochester, NY was mobilized.

As of this posting, a total of 17 people (from the three families) were taken to three different hospitals. 3 were frown by Medevac to a Level 1 trauma center. One infant is currently in emergency surgery. Boruch Hashem, it appears that everyone is in stable condition.

Seventeen people were injured, two critically, and traffic was stopped on the New York State Thruway for more than three hours today when two vehicles crashed into a truck bed lying in the eastbound lanes near Manchester, Ontario County.

State Police said a dump truck operated by John Hoey, 49, of Oswego, was traveling eastbound about 4:30 a.m. when the box of the truck lifted and struck the County Route 7 overpass at mile marker 337. The box detached from the truck and landed in the road, while the truck continued a short way and came to rest in the median of the Thruway.

It’s unclear why the box of the dump lifted and whether it was a mechanical or operator error, said State Police Sgt. Robin Urbaniak of the Thruway barracks in Syracuse.

A few minutes later, in the early morning darkness, a 2004 Chevrolet passenger van operated by (moderated), 47, of Brooklyn, came along, attempted to avoid the box, but instead side-swiped metal box.

Two adults, including (moderated), and eight children were inside the Chevrolet. Two of the children were airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital. The others were transported by ambulance to several Rochester area hospitals.

Shortly after that collision, a second vehicle, operated (moderated) New Jersey, also struck the box.

(moderated) 2003 Chevrolet Suburban was occupied by three adults, including (moderated), and four children. They were taken to several Rochester area hospitals for treatment.

The nature and severity of the injuries was unknown, though at least two passengers’ injuries were considered serious.

The eastbound lanes of the Thruway were closed between exits 43 (Manchester) and 42 (Geneva) for more than three hours and the County Route 7 bridge was also closed while crews assessed the damage. Lanes reopened about 12:15 p.m.

No tickets have been issued, though the accident is still under investigation, Urbaniak said.
