Lakewood EMT Pulls Elderly Driver From Car before it Bursts Into Flames

njt 1PHOTOS: A Lakewood EMT this evening is credited for saving an elderly man’s life by pulling him from a smoking vehicle before it burst into flames, TLS has exclusively learned

The Lakewood EMT, Shaq Shechter of Lakewood First Aid, was traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike shortly before 5 PM when he noticed a vehicle on the side of the road smoking.

The EMT pulled over his vehicle, and noticed that an elderly man was still sitting inside.

He quickly ran over to the vehicle and found the man, approximately 75 years old, shaking.

“I asked him if he had any medical condition, and told him he had to leave the car immediately,” Shechter told TLS. The man, says Shechter, had an existing medical condition.

njt 2The EMT helped the driver out of the car and walked him over to his vehicle parked a couple hundred feet away, until further help arrived. Moments later, the car went up in flames.

“I pulled him out before the first pop – it was quite frightening,” Shechter says.

A State Trooper arrived moments later and transferred the driver to his patrol car until medical personnel arrived on scene, along with the Fire Department. [TLS]

  2. This is truly a fantastic story. I recommend creating a “community service award” and a bestowing the first one on Mr Shechter. This courageous act is emblematic of the kind of decency that the residents of Lakewood nj have. The jewish community that resides in Lakewood has a firm understanding of goodwill and commitment to their fellow man. I am thoroughly moved by this story and firmly believe that all those who have read or witnessed it have been likewise impacted by this event. Mr Shechter, may you be blessed with the continued ability to assist those around you with your unbelievable level of courage and selflessness.
