Lakewood Emergency Responders: Township Should Not Allow Similar-Sounding Street Names

ems night cpr ambulanceEmergency responders in Lakewood say the Township should no longer allow street names that sound alike.

The responders reached out to TLS In an effort to bring to light the dangers it poses.

Just recently, first responders were dispatched to a home in Lakewood, but some units confused the name with another street that had a very similar sounding name.

“It was potentially an extremely dangerous situation,” one veteran emergency responder told TLS. “Thankfully members were not delayed by more than a few seconds” in this particular case, but it was enough to highlight the dangers.

“Every second counts, and there’s just no room for error when someone’s life is on the line,” said another responder.

As for new streets in town, Lakewood Hatzolah, for example, continuously updates all their members with the newest maps, and has programs in place to ensure members are up to date with every road.

  1. Thank you this is truly a very important point.i would like to add another point, investing in a address sign that is lite up can save your life many times 1st responders spend alot of time finding the address when seconds count.

  2. I have a great solution!

When a dispatcher announces a certain possible confusing street, he should say another known street that it’s near…

  3. To emergency street responder: although it’s always the knee jerk reaction to blame the developers and contractors, all street names are approved by someone in the Township inspection/ zoning department. Developers may not always know that there is already a street with almost the same name. It’s the Township’s responsibility to review and deny any names that closely match other street names. Which brings me to another point – why are these emergency responders turning to TLS to address this problem? Let a delegation meet with or send a letter to the appropriate people in the Township inspection/ zoning departmnet.

  4. Like Regency Court and Regency estates
BTW I wish someone would name a street after Sugihara , he really deserves it
Also Rabbi Orlean one of the founders of Bais Yaakov movement

Shouldn’t they be going to the township and/or proper authoritiesto handle this. How is posting this on TLS going to help? Best solution for now is to do as police dispatch and give responders the nearest cross street.

In Queens for example, there are streets like 73rd Ave, 73rd Rd, 73rd Terr. How do they differentiate between them?”

very simple …by the word after the number. If you need to get to 73rd ROAD you will not go to 73rd AVENUE.

  7. All of us from KGH knew there could be three of a certain street, so we would explain, first you’ll get to 73th Terrace the next one after that is …

Someone here must have grown up a few blocks from me.

  8. what about Vine street and Vine Ave, there is about 3 differant Vines in Lakewood and it’s very confusing to explain to people how to find the Vine I live in, especially since they are all in the same area

  9. Saint Nicholas Avenue and Santa Claus Drive
    Hollywood Avenue and Lakewood Drive
Martin Luther King Senior Road and Martin Luther King Junior Way

  10. Hey Sam, Vine Ave & Vine Street are the same street. The sign reads Ave, but the long time residents call it Street, no idea why but that is the way it has always been.

  11. I think tls should give a fabulous prize to whoever gets the most likes in the comments bec I just read all of them just seeing who came up with good ones!!

  12. And the winner is………

    CEDAR!

4 streets with the same primary name, and not invented by developers or builders. All township streets.
