Lakewood drivers reporting flat tires, other damage from potholes; Here’s how to file local, County and State claims (PHOTOS)

It’s pothole season, and many drivers in Lakewood are reporting to TLS about damage to their vehicles sustained from potholes around town.

In a recent post on TLS, dozens of readers listed some of the many potholes around town.

Pictured, are roads this evening where cones were placed inside the holes to alert drivers.

Should your vehicle body be damaged from the pothole, you should file a police report. You can then use the report to file a claim.

(You can report potholes to the DPW at 732-905-3405.)

To file a claim:

You must first determine if the pothole incident occurred on a Township, County, State highway or on a toll road.

For incidents on County roads, you can call the purchasing department at 732-929-2101. For Lakewood, you can call 732.364.2500.

If your accident was on the Garden State Parkway or the New Jersey Turnpike, please visit http://www.state.nj.us/turnpike/maintenance-issue.html or call 732-750-5300.

Accidents on the Atlantic City Expressway are handled by the South Jersey Transportation Authority. You may visit their website www.sjta.com or call 609-965-6060.

If it occurred on a New Jersey State-owned highway, you may fill out the PROPERTY DAMAGE CLAIM-SHORT FORM.

The Registered Owner, and not the driver, of the damaged vehicle must complete, sign and date the Notice of Claim and mail it to the address on the form within 90 days from the date of the incident to preserve their legal rights. The preferred method is via certified mail return receipt requested. Please keep copies of the claim form and submittals for your records.

The claim form must, at a minimum, include:

(a) An estimate for repairs and/or a receipt showing proof of payment for any repairs made;
(b) Specific location where the incident occurred (nearest exit, mile post, cross street, relevant landmarks, etc.)
(c) A copy of an official police report, if one was filed at the time of the incident;
(d) A copy of the Declaration page of the auto policy for the registered owner of the vehicle. However, photos of the pothole are not necessary.
5. Please allow 3 to 6 months for your claim to be resolved. You should note that payment/reimbursement is not guaranteed.

  1. Thank you to the 3 gentlemen who were on oak street this evening dropping cones in the potholes! Would’ve been really difficult to see those tire-busters in the dark.

  2. I would love to know what it has costed us to always have to patch oak street instead of paving the whole road already………. This has been on going for at least 5 years we probably could have repaved this road at least several times already.Stop looking the other way already Pave Our Road!!!!!!!!!

  3. So they filled the potholes on Oak last night via another “quick job” which will probably last a few weeks until the craters reappear.

    Yes, it’s bad that the craters there are damaging cars but the bigger issue is the cars swerving on the shoulders to avoid the potholes. People (including myself) regularly walk on those shoulders as there is no sidewalk. I can’t tell how many times I’ve almost been hit and by pure miracle was spared.

    I Wait with my child for his bus on the corner of Oak & Marlin every morning and if it wasn’t so dangerous it would be comical the maneuvers people pull to avoid the potholes.

    Something permanently needs to be done immediately… Either a sidewalk put in (which the mayor promised us residents) or Oak needs to be completely redone.

    I cringe writing this, but If nothing changes there will be blood on the townships hands R”L.

  4. this is a complete waste of time and false hopes. I, as well as 2 other people I know submitted these forms last year and never received a response.

  5. The ONLY way things are gonna change is to vote new people in. We always complain and complain, yet when elections come we go right back to the same people over and over

  6. For state roads such as route 9 or Garden State pkwy
    To report a pot hole
    Call 1800-768-4653

  7. I will give an exact location of all potholes,
    from our eastern border with Brick until our border with Jackson and from our Northern border with Howell until our border with Toms River every half block.

  8. The pothole on east ninth between Princeton and Lawrence was filled but the fill didn’t take bec of the rain immediately following its filling. Can it please be refilled!
