Lakewood driver speeding to hospital let go with a warning

A Lakewood resident tells TLS he was pulled over while speeding to the hospital with his wife, but was let go with a warning.

The resident tells TLS he was driving on (what he believes was) Route 34 early Wednesday morning en route to RWJ, when he was pulled over for speeding – doing approximately 90 in a 55 zone.

“I was pulled over when my wife was in labor early Wednesday morning,” the resident said. “I told him my wife was in labor and he said, “do you want me to call an ambulance?”

The driver says he declined an ambulance, and the officer allowed him to continue on his way, warning him not to speed.

His baby was born approximately one hour after he arrived, the driver said.

  1. I believe they should have ticketed him in the mail or followed him to the hospital. 90 in a 55 zone is something that shouldn’t be allowed…

  2. I’m really not sure about this whole thing. On the one hand I am glad that it did not turn into a fiasco like last time. On the other hand, 90mph??? I don’t think I have ever driven 90 mph. Ever. You have no room for error and our roads are really not made for that. What would we say if God forbid someone got hurt or if the mother was injured??

  3. My wife was in labor on the way to MMC on the parkway and got pulled over by a trooper held for a while and ticketed.

Going 90 in a 55 zone?!?!?!?! the husband should of been arrested and wife sent to the hospital via ambulance!

Your name is definitely not Moshe and if it is it shouldn’t be.

    • well it depends on the distance. so say he was going about 30 miles on highway 34 speed limit is 55 and most ppl would go at the speed of 65mph it would take him 28 minutes. and now at the speed of 90mph it would take 20 minutes

  5. 90 is a bit much and probably unnecessary. 75-80 should do for most emergencies. Gotta let him go no matter what and maybe escort, you don’t want to be responsible for holding him up.

  6. To @first responder and @Yitzchok: actually, while I’m not at all condoning or recommending going 90mph, if RWJ is appx 51 miles away, 90mph would save about 20 minutes rather than driving 55mph: 1.5 miles per minute rather than .92 mile per minute = 34 min rather than 55 minutes.

  7. This brings us back to the first problem. The muncipality with the fastest growth in the state, does not have a high risk delivery option close by.

  8. Mazel Tov on the birth of your new baby. My question is why we don’t have a local hospital with good materinety and infant care. We had the service from n Kimball, but it closed. The couple have to speed to hospital at least 30 minutes away.

  9. Going that fast is bound to get the driver pulled over, ticketed or not, defeating the purpose of speeding!
That’s excactly what I was thinking when my wife was in labor. Our situation was also desperate so I called the hospital and they had the team waiting for us at the front door.

  10. Kudus to @Lakewood driver and @A parent. at least some people understand what the problem really is. We need a local hospital with a competent maternity ward. We had a great staff when Dr. Feinberg was here and his practice was delivering 25+ babies a week. It is disappointing they closed it…

  11. Nice Police Officer but the husband…
When I drove in ambulances, even for critical Ill patients, I never allowed the driver to speed, as the risk of getting in an accident is REaL, killing or injuring another driver or an innocent pedestrian, for your selfish desire to get to Robert Wood; while there are so many other qualified hospitals much closer, is not an excuse. Mazal Tov, but next time, please, deliver im Jersey Shore (20 minutes away) and avoid putting everyone in your way, Into a םכנה .
