A Lakewood bus driver today checking a bus following a morning run found a child sleeping on the bus, school officials tell TLS.
The bus driver, from Jay’s Bus Service, finished his morning run and before leaving the school premises performed a check of the seats. That’s when he found the young child sleeping. He woke him up and walked him off the bus.
“The bus driver is to be commended for doing what many drivers fail to do,” said a school official. “We’ve heard stories of children who ended up in a bus lot, and during such heat, it could have ended badly.”
School busses have a safety system that will not allow the bus to be turned off and the door opened without walking to the back and pressing the child check button
Huh but why can’t u just push the button and shut it off
The drive HAS to walk to the back of the bus to turn it off…. as the button is in the back!
It makes perfect sense that it’s there, this way they have no choice but to walk to the back & make sure No1 Was left behind.
Now how do the drivers that don’t do this get away with it? That’s the question.
Thank you dedicated bus driver!
It is imperative that parents take responsibility and teach their kids to be responsible too, that is why kids must be put to bed early instead of going shopping with the parents late at night… I have seen it plenty of times at Kosher West, Walmart, target, etc…
Nonsense! Have you never fallen asleep riding? Or have you never had a restless night because you were hot, bothered or just thinking? Even a well-rested child can doze off on a long bus ride. My daughter had an hour’s bus ride both ways and often fell asleep, despite having had a good night’s sleep. The bus monitor always took care of her. It is very important to have a responsible person supervising young children.

The kids get tired from having to sit so long on the bus. Some kids have an hours ride on the bus.
This was public school or a private school ?
Was the child “checked out” for illness or other factors ?
Blessings upon the driver for the discovery, as the heat could have been fatal.
This driver should get a medal to put in his window.

You must be at least in your 60s for such a comment. Must be your children were all angelic well behaved children. I can try and put my son who is 7 to sleep for 3 hours before he falls asleep so as much as he’s in bed by 7 there are times he isn’t sleeping until 9:30-10:00 and yes he’s tired in the morning. Maybe those errands in the evening will help them fall asleep faster. You never know!
Try Melatonin. Works wonders.
I’m not the same Lkwd mom who was assumed to be in her 60’s.
That’s why every school needs bus monitors. When I was in elementary school the last stop which was usually an 8th grader was in charge of checking each seat including under the seats to make sure Noone was sleeping.
There was at least 2 to 3x that I was the monitor and found kids sleeping.
It has nothing to do with the children going to sleep early or not. Busses and cars have a motion and a noice maker that tends to put children as well as adults to sleep when in motion.
there is no electronic substitute for a real person in charge to maintain safety and discipline and this also frees up the driver to keep his focus on the road
Great job by the driver. I’m an adult and have at least twice needed to be woken up by the NJ Transit bus driver when the bus from NYC pulled into Lakewood. The bus motion always makes me sleepy.
To Wake Up
Your wrong, I’m no where near my 60s and my kids don’t take 3 hours to go to bed. My 7 year olds never went to bed near 9:30 or 10, maybe your giving them too much sugar throughout the day and for dinner.
Yes, it is def true that kids have a long ride and can fall asleep regardless.
But don’t be rude to others saying they must be in their 60s. Just because many parents parent poorly and shlep their young kids to stores when it’s passed their bedtimes doesn’t mean that thats normal.
With all due respect, blaming parents for the fact that their child fell asleep on the bus is more rude than assuming you must be in your 60s to make such a comment.
