Lakewood Adds More Water Piping As Population Expands

nj american water 7-5-10_wmThe primary water provider here has just finished laying down nearly 2.5 more miles of water piping, foreshadowing more development in this ever-expanding town. Since April, New Jersey American Water has installed almost 13,000 feet of pipe in the downtown area, which, while virtually built out, is starting to see high-rises sprouting up that will need stronger water pressure.

The new water main will supplement some 12,500 people who already use well water from the Manasquan Reservoir, American Water Spokesman Richard Barnes said.

“This transmission main will supply our customers with water during periods of high demand and provide them with increased water pressure,” Suzanne Chiavari, a vice president of engineering for American Water, said in a prepared statement.

The $2.1 million project is proof of Lakewood’s “phenomenal growth” that isn’t expected to let up anytime soon, said Steven Reinman, Lakewood’s director of economic development. Reinman formed an infrastructure planning group about six months ago to look at preparations for further expansion. Read more in the APP.

  1. Of course our water bills will increase in order to pay for this much anticipated need for infrastructure. Expect to pay even more in the next years, would be my guess, for those who will benefit by our increasing rates. A rate drop, are you kidding?

  2. A few points about NJAW that have been bothering me about this German based company A: About 5 years ago my bill was about 75.00 per month Today its 250.00 , its still the same 75 just they added in all kinds of goodies and fees masked s this charge and that charge. Njwater has been rippping us lakewood residents for some time now, why should we foot the bill for the growth of ne construction? Let the builders and NJ water pay for it . Gee I wish there was a way to cecede and use well water . This company is a bunch of crooks who suck out every penny and if you’re short a few bucks one month , will come like vultures and shut off your water . does anyone have any ideas on what we can do about this. PS they only do these charges in Lakewood and one other town

  3. Its simple nobody is really screaming and yelling. That’s why the BPU rubber stamps rate increase after rate increase. That’s why many homeowners in Lakewood are paying $200 a month for water. My parents don’t pay that much in NY, and they have a 4 family house! We have to all make some noise so that our local and state politicians put some pressure on American Water to stop gouging us and charge similar rates to those of the Municipal Water. Enough is enough!
