Keren Hamasros: Update on on Oranges and Clementines from Costco

costcoFrom Keren Hamasros: As we recently reported, Shemitta produce has reached these shores and it is imperative that one is vigilant to ascertain the country of origin of one’s produce, especially in this Shemitta year (and next year).

Currently, the Israeli Oranges and Clementines being sold in the local Cosco are produce of the sixth year, and may be eaten after Hafrashas Terumos Umasros.

  1. So is my wife bought these what do i have to do ?

Is there anything that can be done of some were eaten already?

    What about their grapefruit ?

  2. Costco will usually take a return as long as more than half are still there. I am not sure under what criteria. I know that if you don’t like the item they will. Not sure about shevius!

  3. Maven – These oranges have a maaser issue. You can sort this or you may prefer to return.

BUT if you buy Shemitta produce you are not allowed to return it as that is doing business with shmittah produce, as you are considered selling back to shop.
Ask your Rov how to use / dispose of this.

    Hatzlocho.

  4. And just remember, there is a significant likelihood that your return might create a Chilul H-shem. So decide which particular transgression you prefer. There is a remedy for Terumos and Maasros even in Chutz Laaretz.
