Keren Even Habochen was founded in Bais Medrash Govoah over fifteen years ago by a group of yungeleit who recognized the utmost importance of and the stress that must be placed on chazarah, reviewing that which one has learnt. Realizing that the key to successful learning is chazarah, this organized bechinah program, in which yungeleit from participating chaburos take a rigorous closed-book exam on the material learned each month, was founded.
Currently, Even Habochen has an enrollment of 700 yungeleit in 40 chaburos and an annual budget of $450,000. During the last fifteen years, Even Habochen has administered thousands of bechinos on virtually every miktzoah in Shas.
Even Habochen has created an incentive to promote chazarah by rewarding the participants monetarily based on the level of their achievements on the exam. The bechinos are written and graded by the roshei chaburah, and those who score well receive a stipend, while the highest mark receives an added bonus.
“The true success of Even Habochen,” says its founder, Rabbi Chaim Moses, “is what results from the obligation and commitment of yungeleit to review their learning extensively and write their conclusions on paper.” The devotion towards such a thorough review results in a much clearer understanding of the topic at hand, as well as establishing a longer memory span. Such clarity and satisfaction are unparalleled.
The ruach that has been created in Bais Medrash Govoah through the success of Even Habochen is palpable. The intense preparation before
the bechinah, the excitement as the exam date approaches and the satisfaction that the yungeleit experience afterwards are the true
testaments of the accomplishments of Even Habochen.
“This is a program that has proven to be effective in helping a yungerman reach his goal to become an accomplished talmid chochom,” said one member of the program. “By encouraging one to review what he has learned and obligating him to set his conclusions on paper, the sugyos can remain clear in his mind. This gives him the satisfaction of seeing his accomplishment.”
All those working on behalf of Even Habochen receive no remuneration for their efforts, so the money that is raised for Even Habochen goes
directly to those yungeleit enrolled in the program who excel on the bechinos.
Great credit is due, as well, to the many roshei chaburah in Bais Medrash Govoah whose chaburos participate in Even Habochen. These
roshei chaburah devote their time and energy to write and grade the bechinos and ensure the success of the program. On a daily basis,
these individuals, besides for their regular responsibilities of running a chaburah, dedicate themselves to bringing the level of
learning of their chaburah members to a higher plateau and creating the ruach and vitality of Even Habochen.
