GE cooking appliances are no longer under the Hechsher of the Star-K.
“Please be advised that, effective immediately, all GE cooking appliances are no longer certified by the Star-K,” the Kashrus organization said. “Our website will be updated to reflect this change in the next few weeks.”
Going forward, any consumer or dealer who needs information on the Sabbath mode, should contact GE at: 1-800-626-2005.
Is this for old appliances? Can they give more details I have a brand new oven…
At least they didn’t drop this right before yom tov. Any word on what the issue is?
Do we have a reason why?
Anyone know if this includes older models or only current models?
Why would I call GE for the kashrus of my oven? What does this mean? I would call my Rabbi.
They were saying for any technical questions so that you understand what it does (or does not) do or any problems with how it engages (or doesn’t). Then you can take that information to your Rav.
Why did they remove? What happened?
This post is unfair to the consumers as we can’t rely on GE for Hashgacha and Halacha and it seems as if the Star K is absolving themselves of all responsibility.
Does this mean all new appliances? Is it for appliances previously purchased? If we bought an appliance because it had the Star K certification for Shabbos Mode can we return them?
It would be beneficial if the Star K would send out a detailed announcement regarding this post.
This article needs a lot of more information.
Is this retroactive? Is the Star-K saying all items already in use are not truly “Sabbath Mode” and that Sabbath modes should be used?
Or is it only on new appliances?
Is this a financial problem between GE and Star-k? I believe that GE sold off its appliance business. Did the new owners not want to continue the relationship?
Or did Star-K find that the items were not manufactured according to specifications expected?
Explanation by the Star-k are in order!
This smells of a financial disagreement or discontinuation and not an actual halachic kashrus matter. However until more info is released, this is just speculation…
Can TLS post a reference where they got this info as I can’t find on star-k website
Everyone take a very very very deep breath and hold it for a few seconds before spouting anymore spoutings.
Just about all of GE appliances which have an issue, are all compatible with Zman Technologies system.
Don’t worry, Don’t have to throw out your oven or refrigerator, although you might have to spend the extra $200 .
I have a GE refrigerator which is supposedly compatible with the Zman Tech device. I bought the device even though my fridge does have a Shabbos mode. I’m not sure if it’s an issue with all with all compatible fridges, but while using the Zman device vs the built in Shabbos mode on my fridge, it wasn’t keeping my refrigerator or freezer at the same temps as my built-in Shabbos mode. By the time Shabbos was over, I had stuff starting to melt in the freezer. I tried it for a few weeks and now it’s just a glorified paperweight for me. When contacting Zman about the issue, they told me that it was performing as it should.
The point is, people who bought a refrigerator based on the Star-K certification are entitled to more information as previous posts mentioned.
STAR-K did not yet release a public statement. Someone jumped the gun to get a “scoop”.
I don’t understand why other needs a Hashgacha [ps it doesn’t] aslong as Shabbos mode shuts off the light you’re good to go you’re never allowed to open up the oven anyways when the fire is off, you need to wait till the fire turns on
(Rabbi gissinger zt”l told me that last part)
ovens changed alot in the past few years and you cannot compare a psak on an older model to todays appliances
i recently discovered that when you open the oven door the fire automatically turns on after 30 seconds. I recently invented a piece to block the button which turns off the sensor. I can be reached at 8455584525 or at ezerevusa @gmail.com
Most models today are compatible with the Shabbos Keeper from Zman Tech which has a hechsher from the OU and CRC. That is still accessible and it actually works very well. From what I’ve heard is that that it was for financial reasons that GE dropped the Star-K.
The star k website is very specific about the issues. Whoever wrote this article just didn’t include the information
