GE Shabbos Keeper by Zman Technologies |
Issue
Since their introduction, Zman Technologies’ Shabbos Keeper (endorsed by OU) for GE equipped ovens have been well received by Shabbos observant consumers, providing both halachic enhancements and ease-of-use convenience.
Due to reports of consumer confusion surrounding the use of this device, OU wishes to clarify that: Shabbos Keeper is designed to enable food to be left in oven before Shabbos and retrieved on Shabbos. It is not intended for the introduction of food into the oven on Shabbos – which is strictly forbidden. This is the case irrespective of whether the food items were previously cooked, roasted or baked, and whether those are dry or wet.
For guidance in the intricacies of Shabbos observance, one should always consult their personal halachic authority.
The main purpose for us consumers in using the Shabbos Keeper for Ovens is for Yom
Tov. For Shabbos we don’t need the not so cheap Shabbos Keeper. We can use the built in Shabbos Mode and have it shut off before serving the first course. Remember the interior Oven Light MUST BE ON BEFORE you set it to Shabbos Mode.
Are there any issues with returning food on Yom Tov ?? Or better, on introducing raw food to the oven on Yom Tov ???
My oven the light doesn’t need to be on to set in Shabbos mode. Every model is different. As to Yom tov, according to Halacha there is no issue with cooking raw food. Nor is there a problem with problem reheating food on Yom Tov. Many of the issues that the Shabbos Keeper is supposedly needed for are dependent on specific models and what you are trying to do. Most models the built in Shabbos mode resolves every potential shaila.
This is an important Shabbos Advisory – not a Kashrus issue. Please change the headline.
