[Readers Submitted -with photos] About 3pm today police were called to the corner of Negba and Ridge. A few groups of juveniles as young as 10-14 years old were driving on bikes (2 per 1 bike) decided to steal bikes from a few homes on Shoshanna, Dina, and Manetta. Other bikes were also stolen. Some of the bikes were securely locked in their yards and were damaged when found later. Not all bikes have been recovered.
The first call came to police to come to Negba and Ridge. An adult who hadwitnessed the juveniles stealing the bikes from Dina Ct chased them and was able with the help of others in stopping some of them from getting away with one of the bikes.
One of the juveniles was driving a white spray painted bike and had white paint on his shorts (see pictures). An officer arrived and returned the gold bike to the owners who had arrived on scene once it was verified by the adult who witnessed the bike being taken. The spray painted bike was placed in the police car and the juvenile with the white paint on his shorts was simply let go after supposedly giving his “name”.
At that point other neighborhood kids stated that other bikes were stolen but there was no proof.
A few minutes later another bike was discovered stolen. The owners were able to locate the bike at 156 Ridge and the tenants and juvenile stated they were innocent. Although a police car was parked directly across the street and a call was placed to LPD, the police officer waited 10 minutes to exit his car to deal with the situation. At that time the juvenile had left. The bike was returned to the owner with broken brakes.
Another bike was discovered stolen from Manetta and when the juvenile driving the bike in the vicinity of 156 Ridge was approached by others he took off as he saw the police officer in his car.
At the same time a silver bike (see picture) was abandoned at 152 Ridge (East 5th and Ridge). Police were called. The police officer who was previously at 156 Ridge arrived simply ignored the request to take the bike although the bike was there for almost 20 minutes. It was reported that a large group of juveniles were hanging out there before the police arrived and were thought to have been associated with the group who had been stealing bikes. They may have abandoned the bike earlier.
A second officer arrived who professionally tried to locate the owners. At that point the bike was placed into the police car and brought to HQ.
PLEASE LOCK YOUR BIKE WITH HEAVY DUTY U LOCKS.
The owner of the bike stolen should call the police as soon as possible to report the incident otherwise it will go unreported and additional criminal activity will just continue.
Captain Greg Meyer, Chief Lawson and others in LPD are trying to see what can legally be done so they can get the real name of these petty theft juveniles to create a database of repeat offenders.
Residents are asking the police to take some real action.
For years, these juveniles have been getting away with these crimes as the bikes are simply returned if they are found and the culprit is set free with no real information given (so LPD can track them) and no real consequence.
The possible approach is for the Juveniles to be brought to the police department and released only to a parent or legal guardian once they receive proof of name and address. With this option the police can hopefully create a database of these juveniles and stop them in their tracks of joining a future life of crime as this may deter the juveniles from repeating the offenses. Without consequences these juveniles’ will soon be stealing cars or worse -GANGS.
With the warm weather and many juveniles left at home all day unattended expect these activities to continue.
Yeshivaleit should have never moved in that neighborhood,
HERE IS AN IDEA SO OUR POLICE OFFICERS ARE NOT TIED UP WITH THIS NONSENSE: ***HIDE, LOCK, AND SECURE YOUR BIKES!!!!!***
when your toys are strewn all about the neighborhood, or placed in a clearly visible location- your asking for trouble.
(you invited these miscreants into lakewood; now deal with their offspring)
I think what they need is for someone to ‘splain’ it to them in their own language
Instead of calling the police…try locking up your bikes and bringing your toys in and locking your windows and doors. Then you have no need to call the police. It’s simple, try it!!! It works!!!
DO NOT LEAVE YOU BIKE OUT TO BE STOLEN. teach your children that their toys are valuable and not to be left anywhere.
write down the serial #’s of your kids’ bikes. take a picture. When it does get stolen, you have proof.
Instead of calling the police, try locking up your bikes, windows, doors. Then you won’t have to call the police. It works, try it. Really it works!!!
Maybe the police are tired of running after the unsecured property, doors and windows. Try locking things up. You won’t have to call the police.
This was well-written and informative.
Punks
TLS = you dont “drive” bikes you “ride bikes”
“driving on bikes ” is incorrect
what are a raciest?! its a free country you can live where you want this is not Germany were there were ghettos how dare you tell people were to live
you all sound fine with the officers behavior i.e not geting out of the car until 10 minutes passed …i wonder if this was your bikes you would probably not be reacting in such a forgiving manner toward that officer
att MR CONSERVATIVE READ ENGLISH COMPRANDE
THE BIKE LOCKS WERE BROKEN OFF – THE BIKES WERE IN THEIR BACK YARDS,
GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF THE POLICE ENFORCED AND CHARGED THESE KIDS OR AT LEAST BROUGHT THEM IN THE WORD WOULD SPREAD TO STOP STEALING BIKES. NOW THEY GET A FREE RIDE HOME.
i hope lcsw can get involved in this by locating these wiseguy kids and finding out where they live. that way they can approach the parents (if the children live with them) or other legal guardian and question them about the things these kids do. do not look at this as a problem. look at it as a challenge. then it will help to look at this challenge as a way of finding solutions. and there is always more than one solution to a challenge.
i dont understand when people blame the victim , your window was open or the bike was in the yard ,,, does this give somone a right to steal ….
#13- unless these kids(thieves) are super-hero’s idk how they broke the locks… things are not adding up!!!
if things were locked up, it would take bolt cutters, and some serious muscle to break/cut. and if the bikes were hidden how did anyone find them?
do you COMPRANDE? THINGS ARE NOT ADDING UP!!!!!!
to # 1:
You can say that about ANY neighborhood.
PS We’re in galus.
LCSW we called them but no one answered,
It’s called going into the back yards. And yes they broke the brakes on the bike when they got the chin and lock off. And yes they did break a lock. A group of about 6-8 juveniles Spanish and black.
So zip it. And maybe get involved and help your community instead of sitting on you back side and typing your opinions.

I am not locking anything up,its the criminals who should get locked up, I came to lakewood precisely because I DONT WANT TO LIVE IN A PRISON.
What’s next hide your car and your pocket book r u crazy where do we live in harlem ?
to # 22 no you live in lakewood, lock up everything
watch your kids to
You must report every incident.
The slumloards are the ones who need to be locked up , that will solve all the problems.
Bottom line, Put it away where it is out of sight. Times are bad and crime is up.
your making way too much out of this. I would prefer if everyone stopped at stop signs, did not talk on cell phones while driving and so on.
Kids will be kids,
Interesting how the Scoop, ( which, I love ) will publish photos of minoritiy children and infer they are heading for a life of crime, but no mention of (moderated).
all bicyle’s should be kept locked up or if the homeowners have a garage that is not used for car’s and there is room keep everything in there, including strollers. i’ve seen some nice strollers that are left out all the time. OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND!

With all due respect, if you do not do anything to protect yourself (walk in groups at night) and your property (lock your cars and windows and doors, put your toys away) then you ARE ASKING to be a victim! It is wrong to steal, but if you did nothing to deter them, then YOU are daring someone to do harm to you or take your stuff. And this type of victim does not get my sympathy.
I think the real issue is the fact that the police dept. Is short about 40 officers and it’s not safe to have another officer tied up for hours doing paper work on the arrest of a juvenile bike thief. Even if the bike thief is found guilty as a juvenile they won’t goto jail or even have to pay a fine.
#22 You really need to check yourself and your comments; we are All people, and I could say that all the new residents have brought Lakewood down becasue I remember a loving community. As for Harlem, it is a beautiful area full of rich culture and Good people with lots of American History. Stop being so nasty. Maybe GOD put you here in Lakewood to learn to love your neighbor as you love yourself. Learn and be good to other people, turn the other cheek. I have, many times with the neighbors who allow their children to come into my yard and take my flowers and break my flower pots, and refuse to acknowledge their own childrens actions. Oh yeah but I do not call the LPD. Yes taking my flowers without permission is against the law too! People in glass houses should not throw stones.
Peace be with you all and put your belongings away when not in use, it makes the community look nicer and keeps temptation out of the minds of other to take what does not belong to them.
Thank you
moshe ber says ” I came to lakewood precisely because I DONT WANT TO LIVE IN A PRISON.”
Here again you are looking for LPD who is overworked with calls and understaffed to take care of things that you should be doing yourself. Lockup the bikes in a shed or in the back yard. Don’t make the so easy to be taken. Come On It is not an emergency to have a bicycle stolen as opposed to Motor Veh Accidents, Robbery, Domestic Crimes, or even the occasional Vehicle theft..but you are the first line of defense..the police can not be everywhere at once..there are only so many things they can do.
I whole heartily disagree with anonymous. Listen I am a law abiding resident and my rights are to be protected by the powers that may be. I have a right to live free I have a right not live in fear. If there are criminals out there in my neighborhood then the police have to protect me its the criminals that should have fear not vice verse again I will not live in a prison I will live without fear from criminals its the police department who have to do their job to protect and I belive they do a pretty good job maybee just a little more of an effort will do the trick
Take a stroll through (moderated) look how many bikes are just thrown on the ground in the park and obstructing the sidewalks. Children should learn how to take responsibility for there property. Parents should train there kids to take responsibility of there bikes toys etc… I understand the bikes stolen from Ridge area were locked up and these menaces came and stole them, they should be slapped with a misdemeanor and sentenced to community service.
The police are helpless. Tough neighberhhods need a neighberhood watch, wifi cameras and private security .
BECAUSE THIS IS BECOMING THE NORM WITH NO CONCEQUENCE – ADULTS ARE CHASING DOWN THESE JUVINILES. THE POLICE HAVE NOT ENFORCED THE ISSUE OF HEM BEING CHARGED OR EVEN BROUGHT IN FOR THEIR PARENTS TO PICK THEM UP FROM THE PD.
IF ONE OF THEM GET HURT IT WAS BECAUSE THE POLICE DID NOT ENFORCE THE ISSUE AND NOW PARENTS WHO PROPERTY IS BEING STOLEN ARE CHASING DOWN CARS AND THESE JUVINILES TO RETREIVE THEIR PROPERTY.
ANS YES- IT WAS NOT JEWISH KIDS- IT WAS ALL MINORITY KIDS. FACT IS FACT!!!
TLS REPORTS THE FACT.
PICTURE OF JUVINILE WHO STOLE BIKE IS NOT A STOCKED MEDIA PICTURE.
IT IS THE KID – LOOK AT HIS SHORTS- WHITE PAINT AND SPRAY PAINTED BIKE.
my child’s bike was LOCKED to a fence by yeshiva ktana (overnight) and it was stolen.
The negligence of the police warrants a full investigation, since it appears to be wide spread.
Yes it’s true that owners should secure their bikes, but that doesn’t minimize the severity of the crime. THE POLICE ARE STILL AT FAULT, AND NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE BY OUR ELECTED AFFICIALS INCLUDING (moderated).
Maybee its time for “Chaptsam”
its not so hard to break a fence…… you have to lock it to a metal pole or somthing!
to # 33 ,you are right ! everybody has to be more careful about making statements & making negative comments about any group or city! There are very good people in every race, religion & city! We have to spread shalom around the world ! To # 22, please make a kidush hashem with your future comments, you never know what nasty comments could be gorem!
#41 You have no idea what you are talking about. I bet you are just upset with the police because they gave you another ticket for driving and talking on your cell again.
