A man was injured in Costco today when his gun apparently accidentally discharged, sources told TLS.
According to witnesses, shoppers at the Brick Costco heard a “pop” shortly before 1:00 PM and then saw a man walking towards the exit.
”We heard a huge pop, everyone looked and saw someone walking towards the door while saying I’m a retired cop,” a witness told TLS.
“My husband and I were walking out of the store and the idiot (sic) with the gun allowed his weapon to go off,” said another shopper. “It was scary, I rushed out of there. There were little children walking in with their parents. How scary! I’m thankful no one was seriously injured.”
Emergency personnel have responded to the scene to treat the victim, said to be in his sixties.
Police have not immediately responded to a request for comment.
UPDATE 7:57 PM: “On Sunday, January 21st, at approximately 1pm, Brick Township Police responded to 465 Rt 70 (Costco) for an accidental discharge of a firearm,” police told TLS. “The owner of the firearm sustained a non-life threatening injury. The incident is under investigation.”

@TLS. It’s not a misfire. That would indicate an intentional trigger pull and a round not going off. What this is called is a NEGLIGENT DISCHARGE. It happens because the person was handling the firearm in an unsafe way. Guns don’t just go off.

why was the safety not on? So much for gun safety training before you can get a permit.
Big machlokes but many hold you should always have your gun ready to fire(safety off with bullet in chamber) and just have a holster with a good trigger guard

I just feel some of the comments that were left regarding this issue are a bit cruel. Especially since all the information is not available to the public as of yet. Don’t get me wrong Comments should be made, but the negativity should be placed on the back burner, until all the facts are available to the public. However everybody’s entitled to their opinion. Just keep in mind that while all the information is not out and available to the public making comments regarding a specific event before knowing the facts isn’t the best way to be heard. Probably it’s best to just wait for the investigation to be done. The facts be put out to the public, once that’s done feel free to make whatever comment(s) you want about the event. The instructor who made a comment regarding what a mis-fire is and a Negligent discharge, couldn’t define it any better to everyone.

Learn from this. How many drivers hurt themselves while they crashed their cars yesterday? Safety matters. Driving a car is a privilege. Carrying a gun is a right. Do both safely.
