The Howell Township Council canceled its meeting scheduled for tonight, where public hearings were set to be held on three controversial ordinances, citing concerns that large crowd would violate New Jersey’s Open Public Meetings Act, commonly known as the Sunshine Law.
Township officials announced the cancellation shortly after the meeting began, after hundreds of residents arrived to attend the hearing.
According to officials, the size of the crowd exceeded the capacity of the meeting room as well as an overflow room, preventing the public from being adequately accommodated in accordance with state transparency requirements.
The ordinances under consideration had generated significant public interest and opposition in recent weeks, prompting large turnout expectations from residents seeking to voice their opinions during the hearings.
One measure would establish new limits on impervious coverage, the amount of pavement and buildings permitted on a property, while also restricting certain types of coverage in front yards.
A second proposal would standardize regulations governing private garages and residential driveways. According to the ordinance, the changes are intended to “ensure adequate off-street parking, manage impervious surface coverage, and preserve the residential character and quality of life that defines the township’s residential neighborhoods.” The ordinance would impose new driveway regulations and establish garage requirements based on the size of a home, though existing homes would be exempt.
The third proposal would impose new regulations on accessory structures on residential properties, including sheds, pool cabanas, storage buildings and detached garages. The ordinance would also limit the types of accessory buildings permitted and place restrictions on how such structures could be used.
Under New Jersey’s Sunshine Law, public bodies are required to ensure meetings are open and reasonably accessible to the public. Officials determined proceeding under the circumstances could have exposed the township to legal challenges if residents were unable to gain access to the meeting.
No immediate rescheduled date for the hearings was announced Tuesday night.
Prior to cancelling the meeting, the council passed the municipal budget.
Township officials said additional information regarding the rescheduling of the meeting and public hearings would be released in the coming days.

I was thinking of making an event to sell Israeli real estate by the Howell township building at 7 pm today. That would definitely bring out a lot of upstanding people…..
What was the meeting about?
To try to get Orthodox Jews as miserable as possible so for now these white trash thugs on Howell board want to make it illegal to close in your garage!!!!!!
The Orthodox would like non-Jews to not be anti-Semitic and respect your Torah way of life. Should we not be extended the same respect as fellow human beings even if we are not a member of your community? Has Hashem not created Jew and Gentile in His image? Calling the Howell Town Council “white trash thugs” is very disrespectful. I hope Lakewood Scoop publishes as I think it is reasonable for me to point this out.
If you stand up for yourself or your rights they will call you all kinds of names. That game is as old as time. Let the insults roll off of your back like a duck. They’re just trying to discourage you from speaking up and taking it like it is. I used to think, they should move to Utah or somewhere where there’s wide open unoccupied space where they can build as much as they want. The I realized why they don’t do that. Because they need to do that in a twin or city where there are tax payers that they can leech off of. There you have it. I said it out loud. I’m not against any religion, I’m just really against bullshit artists.
Why did the scoop allow the second to last word to be posted?
we deeply respect everyone Jew and gentile like you said we are all created with the image of god, however when you try to pass laws that are obviously targeting us and trying to just make our life really difficult ( example: Every home needs a garage etc) you tarnish your soul and you disconnect from the image of god that you have and thus turn into a white trash thug!
That still does not give you the right to call anyone a “white trash thug”. How would you as a Jew feel if I called you a derogatory term? I am just trying to have a respectful dialogue.
Sorry but that’s what they are
Probably about the ridiculousness that goes on in all of the towns around Lakewood. The overdeveloping. The want of some to just build a school right on your residential street. The want of some to just keep purchasing property and even private homes and then renaming it and calling it a religious building and then he tax exempt while the rest of the honest property owners are on the hook to cover the property taxes for the town. The list of low down quality of life ruining behavior goes on and on. But be careful. Because if you boo ice your opinion or objection to the low down behavior you’ll be labeled anti Semitic. I’m not against anyone because of what religious they are or whom/how/ or what they worship. What I am against is some people thinking they have to fight to now follow the same rules and laws as everyone else. There comes a time when someone has to have the balls to stand up and say ENOUGH is ENOUGH!!!!
They switched around the order to put the budget first, then suddenly when they got up to the ordinances they canceled the remainder of the session for overcrowding. THEY SHOULD ALL GET A LIFE
What exactly are these thumbs down for, did I lie about what happened at the meeting, I was there ,were you?
they are trying to pass a law that would not allow converting a garage to living space. this will affect the frum community in many ways and they came out strong to oppose it there were more than 500 frum people at a town meeting that usually sees 50-75 people
Anything but say what the ordinance is
can we have details what this is about? if its about large scale developments, after seeing how lakewood shtut get ruined from its irresponsible development, i would fight any large developments that would cause traffic
No, it’s about banning garage conversion, and similar things to assure that no new synagogues are allowed in Howell
1. Preventing garages from being finished to add living space
2. Limiting size of driveway for homes
3. Limiting amount and size of accessory buildings (sheds, etc) on properties
This would limit not only shuls.
Many houses are small but have double garages. The potential to convert a garage to bedrooms is very important for frum families.
What are the new proposed ordinances? A shul must have 50 acres? A Yeshiva must have 100 acres? And they could be built on route 9 only? Etc etc . They are hurting themselves as when they sell their properties will go for much less. But they don’t care if they hurt themselves, they would rather hurt yidden, just like Iran.
I lived in Jackson for ten years. I’ve seen these rules ordinances passed before. Everyone knows who they’re really aimed at. If it passes, it might actually turn out to be a good thing. It seems like they haven’t learned from what happened in Jackson. It could give the Agudah or others strong legal ground to fight back. It might be tough for a few years, but in the long run it’ll probably work out better. It’s crazy how people just don’t learn from other people’s mistakes.
Stop threatening to sue people and start LISTENING. Do you want to be good neighbors, part of a larger, diverse community, or do you only want what YOU want? People do not want their beautiful communities to be destroyed and end up like Lakewood (overdeveloped, shoddy and overcrowded construction, terrible traffic, no respect for the impact on the environment, public schools destroyed, etc.). Step back and consider what people are really worried about: It’s not anti-semitism, it’s frustration!
Making an ordinance against someone converting a garage to extra bedrooms will not help traffic flow. Stop convincing yourself. 10 years ago the extra bedroom in garage didn’t cause a problem but now it does?
I don’t live in Howell but I’m listening and all I hear is loud n clear anti-semtism. I am not one that ever calls it out easily but this is clear as day.
Learn from Jackson, been here for 9 years and I get along with all my neighbors. Including the one running a repair shop out of his driveway. He’s been doing it for 30 years. I live and let live.
When a guy got up at a howell township meeting and said “a Jewish guy walked down my block and didn’t say hi” that sounds like selective frustration. I live right nearby and many people walk down the block without saying hi to me. He only complains at township meetings when it’s about a jew
That’s not at all the frustration I’m talking about. That’s just pettiness. I’m talking about people who are sincerely worried that their community is going to be changed beyond repair, to suit just one group of people, and they have no say in it because of intimidation and threats of lawsuits.
my point is that some were proactively resentful before we even showed up.
we all enjoy the peacefulness of the neighborhood, and appreciate the residents who have made it that way. we are law-abiding and safe citizens.
Instead of freaking out and trying to pass unreasonable laws to stop us from moving in, they should try having a productive conversation. the people behind this don’t want a ‘larger, diverse community’. they’d rather try to legislate us out of the area.
How about telling us what those ordinances under consideration are?
respect is a must , frustration is felt on both sides .
what are the ordinances and how do they really affect the diverse community
which of these pose a real issue to the existing community
Mikva- no major noise , discreet , minimal signage if any ,
making your garage in to a bedroom – honestly what cud possibly be an issue? do u think i wud mind if u had your sons eagle scout troop meet weekly on you property?
is a mini van parked in front of your home an issue , ?
