ems at evacuation scene 5-18-16The approximately 200 employees have been evacuated.

UPDATE:

The plant was conducting routine operations in their laboratory when a chemical reaction occurred between two different products, an official told TLS.

The reaction then caused a fire to break out which was kept under control by the automatic fire sprinkler system until the firefighters were able to fully extinguish it. Additional LFD Fire Companies were dispatched to the scene to assist with the personal decontamination of those operating in contaminated areas and mutual aid was requested from Berkeley HazMat, Point Pleasant Sta#75, Whitesville Sta#57 (Jackson) and Ocean County Fire Coordinators.

Berkeley Haz Mat deployed personnel into the laboratory with chemical protective suits to determine if the area was safe and what actions might need to be taken. Samples were taken with metering equipment and deemed safe for clean up operations by outside contractor.
