JUST IN: Challenger to Rep. Chris Smith Dropping Out, Will Endorse Him for Reelection

A challenger to Rep. Chris Smith will be dropping out of the primary race today and endorse Smith for another term in office.

Shawn Hyland, the former director of the Family Policy Alliance of New Jersey, announced his October that he would be running to challenge Democratic Rep. Andy Kim in the 3rd Congressional District, but after map redrawing put his town in the 4th District, Hyland said he’d challenge Smith for his congressional seat.

However, Hyland has now reversed course, and will join Rep. Smith at noon in Toms River to endorse him for reelection.

“Congressman Chris Smith embodies the core values of A Better America—civility, conviction, and the common good,” Hyland said, according to the NJ Globe.  “I cannot in good conscience campaign for a better America knowing I would be challenging a congressman who practices those ideals in the halls of Congress each day.

“My congressional run was never about Shawn Hyland, it was always about A Better America.  Smith is like minded with me and shares the same heartbeat on social issues,” he added.

Five other challengers to Rep. Smith in the Republican primary later this year remain in the race.
