Jonathan Pollard to be Released Friday after 30 Years in Prison

pollardJonathan Pollard, who was sentenced to life in prison for passing classified information to a U.S. ally, will be released on Friday, one day short of a 30-year sentence.

TLS was the first worldwide to report about his release on parole, based on information we exclusively received in July.

Pollard, approximately 60, was working as a military intelligence analyst in the Navy when he was arrested in 1985 after passing classified information to Israel. In 1987, Pollard was sentenced to life in prison. He was the only American ever sentenced to life in prison for spying for a U.S. ally.

His parole date would technically be on Shabbos, but since the prison does not release prisoners on the weekends, he will be freed on Friday.

Following his release, Pollard will be barred from returning to Israel for five years.

  1. It is a wonderful turn of events that pollard is finally being released. He is a hero to me. He has sat in prison for thirty years because he felt the need to prevent another holocaust. Both the Israeli and American people along with most of the civilized world owe pollard a debt of gratitude for the crime which he allegedly committed. If it weren’t for his spying Saddam Hussein would have likely had the nuclear capability to destroy Israel and cause much damage to the rest of the civilized world. he who saves a life is as if he saved the world. Pollard may have actually saved the world. So sure he is a hero to me.
According to many reports pollard was punished do severely because at that time it was thought that many American spies were captured because of him. Today we know it was other spies that divulged that information. He was probably a victim of anti Semitism too. Regardless, there is a mitzvah of pidyon shvuyim even on criminals, and definitely for pollard. I would like to thank the Obama administration for allowing the release of pollard. It is one of the only things this administration has done that they should be proud of even if they did it for the wrong reasons.
Bernie Sanders as president would probably be disastrous as he’s somewhere between a socialist and s communist. However, he has a very good point about the over crowding of jails in the USA. We have too many people in jail for too long. He says we have more people in jail here than any other country has. He is more focused on Non violent drug crimes. I think that the length of time given for white collar crimes is criminal. Good people are put away for years for small mistakes. The justice system here is terrible. Many judges and prosecutors have personal anterior motives when they get people locked up. The juries are persuaded by good attorneys as opposed to what’s just. This is a subject for another time. For now let’s rejoice when Jonathan pollard is finally let free.

  2. Pollard is a hero. Reagan signed an executive order to share certain information with Israel. The State Department ignored it, so Pollard gave over that information. Yes that was a breach and he has more than paid for it. There are those who claim he committed espionage; the government charged him with the crime of giving over classified information to an ally. He pleaded guilty. He never pleaded guilty or was even charged with espionage.

At the same time, someone provided the Russians with significant amounts of information. Numerous Russian double agents were called back to Moscow; the Russians knew of the US bunker underneath the Russian embassy in Washington. Someone told the Russians many things and the US had their suspect: Pollard.

In Israel, the Israelis arrested Shabtai Kalmanovich, who admitted to being a Russian spy. Here is the theory: Pollard gave information to the Israelis. Kalmanovich gave that information to the Russians. I challenge anyone to prove that connection.

Moreover, based on the Ames and Hansen cases, we know who handed the Russians all this classified information. It was not Pollard. Yet Pollard the Jew sits in 7 years of solitary confinement while Ames and Hansen are treated nicely.

There is more to say, but not enough space. Pollard is both a hero and baal yesurim.

  3. The biggest raya that Pollard got shafted by someone is that Ames and Hansen, who sold secrets to the Russians and got US spies killed, got far less than him. Hero or not, its mamesh a nebech he spent 30 yrs, 30 YRS, in a cell. Wasted away a lifetime. Terrible.
