Patrick Handel, a supervisor with the Jackson Township First Aid Squad, has been named the 2024 EMT of the Year by the New Jersey Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) and the Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council.
he award recognizes Handel’s exceptional contributions to emergency medical services and his leadership within the community and was awarded at the 2024 National Conference on EMS.
He was chosen among 13 nominees.
Handel, who has served as an EMT since 2016, has earned multiple prestigious accolades throughout his career, including the Jack Johnson Award and the Desirae Ferry Award. This year, he was recognized for his outstanding performance in areas such as patient care, public access to EMS, disaster preparedness, public education, and training.
Handel was recognized by Mayor Michael Reina and the township council with a proclamation for his service and his achievement.
“Patrick exemplifies the spirit of excellence and dedication that EMTs bring to the profession,” said Jackson Township Mayor Michael Reina in a proclamation honoring Handel. “We extend our deepest gratitude for his invaluable contributions to the health and safety of all those he serves.”
Handel’s recognition highlights the critical role EMTs play in their communities, often working in high-stress and life-threatening situations to provide care and save lives. The award celebrates not only his individual achievements but also the dedication and professionalism of emergency medical technicians statewide.
“Patrick embodies the spirit of our volunteer EMS service and is a role model, not only for our community, but for young men and women in our EMT program,” said Council President Jennifer Kuhn.
“As EMT of the Year, Handel continues to inspire his colleagues and raise the bar for excellence in emergency medical services, further cementing his impact on the Jackson Township community,” said Councilman Mordechai Burnstein.
