Issue for Kohanim

Reader-submitted: Good afternoon, As a Kohen, I am on constant look out for cemeteries to make sure I am not driving under trees which hang over cemeteries.

This morning, to my horror, I came across a Jewish cemetery which I’ve passed many times beforehand but unfortunately never realized.

In Toms River, there is a street W. Whitty Rd. On that road, there is a Jewish cemetery called Toms River Jewish Community Cemetery.

The branches are clearly visible and the street is used many times by Kohanim without even realizing.

(To explain where this road is, when traveling New Hampshire South in Toms River and would like to get to the Garden State Parkway or Rt. 9, Waze and other GPS’s will bring you on this road.)

  1. There are actually 2 Jewish cemeteries on W. Whitty Rd. If driving on it poses an issue to a Kohen due to low hanging branches you can take Rt.9 or Old Freehold Rd, instead of cutting through. Otherwise you would need to go to the township and ask them to cut the trees back.

  2. can someone forward this to the Vaad Mishmeres Kehuna. they are very active in helping resolve and publcize such issues. i dont have their contact info
