Is There Anything Wrong With Smoking Only One Cigarette a Day? | Rav Avigdor Miller

Q: Is there anything wrong with smoking only one cigarette a day?

A: If you’ll give me a contract that it won’t be more than one cigarette, I’ll agree. But since you cannot give such a contract, it’s the beginning of a career of chain smoking. Eventually that’s what happens.

You have to know in all things there’s a principle; the first step is what’s most important. Someday I’ll talk about that bli neder. ‘The first step.’ You’re going someplace on the street and somebody starts walking with you and he says, “Come into this place with me,” and you walk in, it’s the beginning of a career. Either upward to Hakadosh Baruch Hu or down to Gehinom. It depends where he’s taking you. Just one step.

If you look back, you’ll see in your career somebody persuaded you to take one step in the right direction, and therefore the first cigarette is the beginning of the end.

I wish more people in Lakewood would be Maskin. Smoking is so bad for your health, and 2nd hand smoke also kills even if you’re just standing by, not smoking!

We need this to end already. Enough is enough.
It’s Assur Mide’oraisa to smoke. It’s like being mechalel Shabbos, but instead you’re being mechalel your lungs 🫁.

Does not say muttar, just doesn’t say assur. Explained to those who asked that that since they had just come out with info then, and many were smoking – including some rosh yeshivos – didn’t feel it was the time to say assur outright. But his sons have said he would say outright assur today, and many poskim do.

There’s also third-hand comnig out more now – that it sticks to the walls and vents. Anything that can be smelled means it’s in the air and having affect.

I have not smoked for over 40 years. Went “cold turkey”, just quit. It is not easy. No smoking in my house! Through the grace of Ha’Shem I will be forever smoke free,

Lakewood eats seed oils smoking organic additive free cigarettes is healthier than fried donuts that lakewood eats and all the red 40 and junk.

Yes, important point. People just don’t realize. Instead of growing in emunah on Chanuka etc, people grow (pun-indented) in junk food. How sad.

It’s time for positive letters, headlines and enough of negatives. Let’s stop with fault finding and criticising other Yidden. We’re up to here with it.

Compliments are very important, but this is too.

Smoking only became “dangerous” once they added hundred of chemicals to cigarettes! People have been smoking for thousands of years! Interesting how only in the 1900s it became dangerous 🤔🤔🤔

Did you consider the fact that life expectancy 200 years ago was literally half of what it is today?

You may have a point – in Africa, where the cigarettes are all-natural, there is virtually no lung cancer. (They say there is such a brand here too.)
Also, they say that 60% of the issue of smoking is the chemical pesticide they spray on the leaves. They could wash it off, but they don’t, as they say it adds to the flavor. Tobacco is a virtually unregulated industry – and maybe the gov. doesn’t bother “everyone” already knows it’s unhealthy.
BTW, all the same goes for vaping – absolutely no regulation, and many unhealthy chemicals – including microscopic bits of metal. Who knows how much harm – to firsthand and secondhand vapers, R”L.
