Over the past few weeks, readers watched tensely as the numbers on Shmuli’s crowdfunding page grew closer to the goal amount needed to set the father of six free from Polish prison. Shmuli’s unjust imprisonment was based on fabricated tax evasion charges and his wife Deena, left to bear the emotional and financial burden alone, launched an emergency crowdfunding page. However, the goal of $90,000 for legal fees and fines has still not been reached.
Shmuli’s wife Deena shared an important update today: The hearing was successful! As long as the family can pay the $90,000 fine and associated legal fees, Shmuli will be free to go home!
With nearly $80,000 already raised Deena is optimistic that Shmuli will indeed be released and able to return to his family in a matter of days. Whether the ending will be a happy or tragic one, however, has yet to be seen. If the final funds are raised, Shmuli walks free, back into the arms of his worried family.
Shmuli’s future, and the future of his young family, still hangs in the balance.
