In PA, you could soon get fined for Texting while Walking; Should NJ be next?

Do you walk through the streets texting? If you live in Pennsylvania, that could soon cost you a fine.

A State bill was introduced, which would allow police to fine people for distracted walking.

Should New Jersey follow?

  1. Yes! Being that Lakewood is home to shomrei Torah one should get fined for eating in the street. The sign could read: “curb your dog”!

  2. Distracted walking would include conversations – even with people who are present! (Some people can’t even chew gum and walk…) Are there even objective parameters to what constitutes distracted walking? Is walking a dog a distraction? Looking out for (illegal) sidewalk cyclists? How about someone who is inebriated?
Of course NJ will hop on to this cash-grab!
    Should they – absolutely not.

  3. Yes!!! People are putting themselves in danger every time they cross the road. Talking or texting while crossing is extremely irresponsible and dangerous!

  4. Absolutely. Not that it would be enforced, but well meaning people walk, talk, and text when they should be watching where they’re going. That includes even while crossing route 9.
I don’t want anyone to be ticketed, but there should be such a rule.

  5. Well, I personally hate when walk and text and pay 0 attention to their surroundings, especially when they cross, for which I have a policy not to wait for spaced out people (not talking about putting them in danger but you know what I mean)

Are smokers getting ticketed for smoking on the street? No!

My point is that people should be educated not to walk and text. Not ticketed, which serves one purpose. To full the pockets of these corrupt politicians.

  6. Will never pass. It’s a ridiculous and totally undefinable law. Maybe they should fine ppl for giving the finger while driving or shouting at someone in public. It’s already illegal to jaywalk. Has anyone gotten a fine for that recently? But למעשה if you jaywalk while distracted and trying to hitchhike at the same time you
Could do one action and be עובר 3 איסורים

  7. The problem is that they’re turning regular human behavior into criminal activity. Even if it’s the wrong thing to do it shouldn’t have legal consequences.

  8. Sounds funny but its true. When I am trying to turn and someone is walking slow and texting I sit on my horn and they jump and that takes care of that. Enough, so much traffic people need to pay attention. The drivers that text and drive should be taken off the road. Get off your phones. It can wait.

  9. Bill was written by a republican lol. All you idiots blaming a liberal lol. It was one of your own. On behalf of my fellow democrats I’ll take your apologies now lol
