As promised, the White House has released a transcript of President Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenski, which precipitated the announcement by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that Democrats will be opening an impeachment inquiry into Trump.
The transcript, which is a memorandum and not a verbatim account of the conversation, shows that Trump asked his Ukrainian counterpart to work with Attorney General Bill Barr to investigate allegations made against Trump’s political opponent, Joe Biden. “There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it…” Trump reportedly said, according to the transcript.
The Intelligence Community Inspector General believed Trump’s request of Ukraine may have been in violation of campaign finance laws, but Justice Department officials determined that Trump’s actions were not illegal. But Democrats say that Trump’s attempt to have a foreign nation investigate his rival is an impeachable offense.
